Work Location Los Alamos National Laboratory - Los Alamos, NM Employment Type Full-Time / Onsite Clearance Type DOE Q Clearance (Position will be cleared to this level) Job Summary / Overview Omega Technical Services is seeking a Product Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) for PT-5 Product Engineering & Product Support at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM.
The PT Division provides plutonium pit related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability.
The selected candidate will leverage their technical expertise within the Product Engineering group in PT-5 (Product Engineering &Product Support). PT-5 consists of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that supports plutonium programs (i.e., pit production, surveillance, research and development, and subcritical experiments) across the entire PT Division. Individuals working in this position will directly support the operations necessary to ensure high-quality production and provide configuration management to the suite of PT programmatic missions from development through production.
R&D Engineer 1
- Basic knowledge of engineering design.
- Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.
- Basic knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following engineering areas: manufacturing, materials, mechanical, chemical, process, data acquisition and data analysis.
R&D Engineer 2
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
- Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.
- Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
- Ensure programmatic objectives through project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
- Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings to coworkers and management personnel.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary groups throughout the laboratory.
- Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
- Mentor junior product and process engineers.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrated through experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
- Basic analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and executing experiments, including analyzing and interpreting data. This includes a commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables.
- Experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing a complete project, system, or component through courses or experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust.
- Experience presenting technical data to stakeholders in written/oral form.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:
- Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical; materials science; chemical; metallurgical or other R&D engineering fields.
- Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing; planning; and executing research and development projects.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds.
- Excellent written communication skills are required, as demonstrated by the ability to recognize technical problems, analysis, and testing to generate suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results.
- Excellent ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and/or publications.
Education/Experience forR&D Engineer 1:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.
- Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 2:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Additional Requirement forDOE O. 426.2:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
- Interdisciplinary project experience with varied technical backgrounds within a group.
- Willingness to take initiative on new tasks or projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
- Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.
- Demonstrated experience performing engineering work using rigorous institutional processes.
- Active Q clearance or equivalent.
- Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).
