National Grid is hiring a Civil Engineer for our Gas Transmission Engineering & Design Group in Melville NY.

Job Purpose

Responsible for the engineering, design, and technical oversight during construction civil aspects of projects for the gas transmission and distribution networks located in NYC (Staten Island, Brooklyn & Queens) as well as Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk County). The Civil Team works closely with multiple stakeholders to support the organizations needs.

Key Accountabilities
  • Perform code reviews and zoning analysis for upcoming projects in preliminary design phase.
  • Perform and Prepare Site Plans, Restoration Plans, SWPPP Plans, MPT plans, per applicable codes and regulations (NYS DEC, NYS DOT, local municipalities etc).
  • Prepare and review geotechnical analysis request for proposals. Includes ability to interpret and utilize the data present in the analysis to make sound engineering judgement for the project.
  • Ability to perform some drafting utilizing AutoCad and follow company standards. Familiarity with Civil 3D a plus.
  • Ability to perform analysis using STAAD.
  • Familiar with building demolition, modifications and new fabrications.
  • Familiar with NYC Department of Building (DOB) code and permits. This includes preparation of some permitting items and working within DOB Now.
  • Ability to design deep/shallow foundations which may include piles.
  • Plans and conducts work requiring judgement in the evaluation, selection, adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Manage technical design MSA's as required ensuring timely deliveries and that all requirements of the design/contract are being met.
  • Provides insight and input on opportunities for enhancing standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Interpret and incorporate corporate process safety procedures.
  • Identify and assist in acquisition of the necessary permits, licenses, and land rights associated with the project.
  • Collaborate with Gas Operations, Gas Asset Owners and Gas Engineering in development of procedures to support the engineering and design of gas facilities in accordance with company and regulatory requirements including all safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.
  • Participate in Storm restoration activities or other system emergencies as called upon.
  • Perform review and sign/seal of drawings as required.
  • Ability to design and review designs of vaults for gas equipment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering Degree in Civil Engineering discipline is required. At least 10 years of engineering, design or project management experience.
  • Candidates in possession of a NYS Professional Engineering License are preferred.

  • Experience in the application of design and construction standards, engineering drawings, and underground construction methods and procedures.
  • Technical knowledge of NYC DOB building codes, location municipality building and zoning regulations, deep foundation design, SWPPP, NYS DOT MPT plans.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, PHMSA, and applicable State regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with safe driving history.

  • Develop project bid specifications and assist in the procurement of engineering and/or and construction services.
  • Manage external engineering design firms, contracted to support projects, to ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, within budget and on schedule.
  • Perform design quality peer reviews.
  • Establish and lead, as necessary, an engineering design project team to develop and manage all engineering aspects of a project, up to and including project closeout and compilation of as-built documentation.
  • Effectively communicate project information with involved internal and external stake holders.
  • Implement change control procedures as necessary to track design changes initiated by engineering or field operations and identify any associated risks that may result. Document any requests to deviate from approved/agreed to parameters and seek authorization where required.

Downstate NY Salary: $146,000 - $172,000 a year

Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company's testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
