HVAC Mechanic - Fayetteville/Ft. Smith, AR

Position Summary:

The HVAC Mechanic position is responsible for all working matters in the operations of both the facilities in Fort Smith and Fayetteville, Arkansas. The nature of the position prevents the designation of a set work location as the work location encompasses all work sites listed in the most current PWS. Daily work sites will be coordinated with the Project Manager.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Acts as the subject matter expert (SME) on all matters pertaining to the maintenance and repair of facilities and installed equipment.
  • Provides technical guidance to the program's technicians and general maintenance workers (GMW)
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs problems with systems.
  • Performs maintenance and operational checks on mechanical and electrical components of systems.
  • Installs temporary and permanent units.
  • Performs scheduled Preventive Maintenance
  • Uses hand and power tools for installations and repairs.
  • Utilizes a variety of ladders and powered manlift devices to access mechanical and facility components requiring repair or preventive maintenance.
  • Interacts with customers to determine problems and repair requirements.
  • Performs preventative & corrective maintenance on all types of equipment.


  • Assist project management in:

    • Setting schedules to ensure appropriate coverage for shifts and assignments.
    • Monitoring work (QC inspections) and taking corrective action as necessary.
    • Provides feedback in evaluation of other employees.
    • Advises supervisor and/or management of work force changes that may affect completion of assigned work.
    • Ensuring that completed work documentation is accurate and submitted to the Deputy PM in a timely manner.


  • Coordinates with vendors and subcontractors by acquiring quotes for the purchase of materials, supplies, equipment and services.
  • Responds to customer (GSA) information requests in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested.



Job Requirements:

Shall maintain a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education annually from a NATE, HVAC Excellence, or UA Star recognized provider program. All HVAC personnel designated to work on, operate, maintain, and (or) repair HVAC equipment or systems shall possess one or more of the following certifications:


  1. North American Technician Excellence (N.A.T.E.) HVACR Service Technician Certification
  2. HVAC Excellence Professional Level Certification
  3. UA Star HVACR Mastery Certification
  4. Valid state driver's license
  5. Successfully passing government and employer background checks and ability to maintain access to government facilities.



Education and/or Experience:

Minimum requirements for this position include a High School Diploma or GED, CFC air conditioning license, plus a minimum of five (5) years of recent (within the past 7 years) journey level experience in a variety of HVAC systems. Experience in directing operation and maintenance of equipment in a supervisory capacity. Also, must possess verifiable understanding and experience in troubleshooting, repair and replacement of building specific equipment.


  • CFC Universal certificate
  • Possess at least 5 years performing operations, maintenance, and repair of commercial industrial air conditioning and refrigeration; experience shall be related to work performed within an industrial setting in accordance with the PWS requirements.
  • A minimum of 2 years of recent (within the past 5 years) experience in Siemens BAS systems, Tridium Niagara Jace, NCMMS, boilers, and chillers over 100 tons.
  • Possess the knowledge of the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems; knowledge of principles and theories of air conditioning and pressure-temperature characteristics for the different systems.
  • Experience responding to and completing corrective action repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all types of HVAC equipment.



Communication Skills

Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff members. Ability to write reports. Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, fellow employees, and customers.

Reasoning Ability

Must be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally be required to lift more than 75 pounds. The employee must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work environment will require on-call rotation. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, heat, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, and/or gloves.


Hourly Rate: $37.41 plus fringe

A background check and drug screen will be conducted for this position.
