Overview

Responsible for providing nutrition education to low-risk WIC child participants and conduct secondary nutrition education contacts. Performs all the duties of a WIC Program Assistant, providing WIC program participant services and performing reception and clerical duties.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Provides nutrition care for low-risk children at follow-up, including all aspects of: collecting and entering information that may include anthropometric data and hematological collection; providing and documenting general participant-centered nutrition education including individual/family sessions and facilitated group discussions; may include WICSmart reports and follow-up to clients.
  • 2. Assists in the certification of WIC applicants by performing the following duties: Interviewing to obtain basic
    demographic data such as name, address and contact information; verifying identity, residency and income
    eligibility by reviewing paperwork presented; entering data into the Statewide "CT-WIC" system.
  • 3. Answers telephone calls in a pleasant and courteous manner, identifying department, and handles requests
    for general information and, questions about WIC benefits, etc. Schedules appointments appropriately.
    Checks voicemail messages and follows-up as necessary.
  • 4. Assists in the certification/recertification process. Performs income verification conforming to State policy for
    determining family size and income. Assures that medical data is complete and within mandated time limit .
    Follows up as necessary via Epic. Enters appropriate information into the required WIC forms as mandated
    by the Connecticut WIC State Plan.
  • 5. Maintains participant files to ensure all required forms are completed and accurate, and scanned under the
    proper heading.
  • 6. Performs various client follow-up procedures such as appointment reminders and follow-up calls for missed
    appointments.
  • 7. May assist in the preparation of materials, visual aids and educational and outreach activities in conjunction
    with other staff.
  • 8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High School graduate or GED required. Successful completion of WIC required Nutrition Aide training within one year of appointment to position.

EXPERIENCE

One (1) to three (3) years clinical experience in a position involving multitasking and heavy public contact. WIC Nutrition Aide training preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

The ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English, and another language when deemed appropriate. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred. Good customer service skills with ability to establish rapport with individuals and deal effectively with people in person and by telephone. Must be detail oriented and organized. Must possess ability to complete basic clerical tasks and to use a computer and various software packages.
