The primary duties of the Southwest Major Bridges Leader include planning, directing and monitoring all aspects of complex, multi-discipline projects with a high degree of technical complexity, involving a diverse project staff. A candidate with experience in delivering complex bridge design projects for clients. Candidate must demonstrate extensive design experience in complex bridges. A candidate with experience in delivering complex alternative delivery (Design Build, Progressive Design Build, P3) projects is desirable.

The candidate will be involved with the technical oversight and coordination of several projects concurrently. Is involved with design and production efforts, conducts schematic, design development and contract document work in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals and other disciplines. Ensures project deliverables and supporting documentation are complete, understandable, conform to applicable and industry standards relative to their intended purpose, including client and HDR requirements.

The duties of the Southwest Major Bridges Leader include overseeing and/or serving in a lead technical role or problem solving role on bridge design projects. You will perform complex structural planning, analysis and design for all structural aspects of transportation projects. Typical projects include suspension, cable stay, arch, segmental, extradosed, steel and prestressed concrete bridges. You must be comfortable being viewed as a technical leader in engineering analysis and design and have proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects. You will often perform as a technical specialist and supervise more junior engineers in the performance of engineering tasks. This role will also serve in a capacity of managing, supporting or leading major pursuits. Responsible for implementing QA/QC procedures and completing reviews of bridge plans for complex projects. Acts as mentor/supervisor for less experienced designers. The Southwest Major Bridge Leader will also ensure that emerging technologies are being implemented and that HDR is continually advancing complex bridge design capabilities. Will also participate in the selection of key staff nationally/globally and identify strategic hires needed for the growth and evolution of HDR's Bridge program. #LI-JF1

Preferred Qualifications




  • BS/MS in Structural Engineering or closely related field is required.
  • California PE license required.
  • 15+ years project and client management experience with significant project experience
  • MS Office experience
  • Good communication, leadership, planning and mentoring skills.
  • Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication both written and verbal skills.
  • Versatility in the following software products: Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor, Civil 3D, Rhino, Revit, MicroStation, Larsa 4D Bridge Plus, SAP 2000, FB MultiPier, Leap Bridge Enterprise
  • Established client relationships with Southern California local municipalities.
  • Experience working with Caltrans Districts 7, 8, 11, or 12 and preparing Caltrans PS&E.
  • Experience in pedestrian bridges and projects with trail/bike path facilities.
  • Experience working in projects involving signature bridges with iconic architectural design.
  • Experience in pursuits for bridge-centered projects.
  • Experience preparing project scope, fee, and schedule.
  • Experience in bridge parametric modeling and design

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years experience in related field
  • Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other business class regional directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
