The Department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist I, Painter.

About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Lead supervisor, this position is responsible for the application of various paint mediums and topcoat finishes as outlined by University guidelines in addition to helping perform carpenter duties as assigned.

What You'll Do



  • Help perform carpenter duties as assigned.
  • Operate hand tools and power equipment such as circular saws, radical arm saws, and drills
  • Assist with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments.
  • Apply, in a professional manner, paints, varnishes, shellacs, sealers, acrylics, urethanes, enamels, latex, stains, anti-skid coatings, and other mediums utilizing necessary professional techniques and abilities. Perform spray painting with necessary spray equipment apparatus within respiratory guidelines and physical condition. Professionally uses brushes, rollers, sprayers, sponges, etc. to apply medium and uses other necessary related equipment including, but not limited to, tape guns, texturing tools, and paint shakers.
  • Ensure that proper mediums, application techniques and safety guidelines are followed during application processes to obtain maximum adhesion and protection of various projects.
  • Finish and refinish wooden items such as furniture, cabinets, doors, and door jambs, wood flooring, podiums, and presentation plaques and awards.
  • Hang and finish drywall. Repair small areas of drywall as required ensuring proper top coat application.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting through various procedures including, but not limited to, high pressure water blasting, high pressure water/sand blasting, mechanical and hand sanding, chemical etching, hand tool chipping, pneumatic and electric grinders/sanders and pneumatic chippers.
  • Tools in this category have the potential of extreme destruction if not used properly; therefore, the employee must ensure proper operation and safety procedures are understood and followed.
  • Assist with erection of various working platforms to include, but not limited to, metal and aluminum pipe scaffolding, pick boards and work states, ladder jacks, extension ladders, step ladders, etc. Operate various types of motorized aerial work platforms and truck mounted lifts. Must be knowledgeable of proper assembly and disassembly procedures as well as required safety railings, stabilizers, kick boards, safety harnesses, and fall protection devices. Must ensure that all safety procedure are understood and followed by assigned employees.
  • Ensure that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained under the direction of Lead Painter. Perform other duties/skills as required by the immediate supervisor.
  • Ensure that work area is a clean, safe working environment utilizing proper protection, barricades and ventilation equipment.
  • Perform game event set-up support for all home athletic events as assigned.
  • Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to employees
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Associate Athletic Director for Facilities/Operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA; must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11.1 Conduct of Athletic Personnel. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial, ethnical and sexual orientation differences.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently and unsupervised.
  • Manage professional and personal time to be handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work, and on-call availability.
  • Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as requested or assigned by Supervisor and/or Associate Athletic Director for Facilities/Operations.


Pay Grade: 13

Qualifications

  • High school education.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time painting experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work in uncomfortable positions as may be required by job assignment.
  • Ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.
  • Knowledge of proper painting procedures.
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize and complete the proper operations of power equipment.

Licenses/Certifications



  • Valid Driver's License - operate department vehicles


Physical Demands & Physical Coordination



  • Requires standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Frequent handling of objects weighing 25 pounds and occasionally lifting weighing 75 pounds.
