About the Job

The Babicheva lab is seeking motivated and experienced Researcher 1 to join our team. The primary purpose of this position is to aid lab members in performing routine techniques, maintaining lab equipment, and perform any other necessary day-to-day functions in the lab. The job will focus on studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the development of pulmonary hypertension and presenting the data in weekly lab meetings, as well as contributing to articles and grant proposals. Specifically, the position will involve isolating lung vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells from humans and animals with pulmonary hypertension and perform the calcium fluorescence imaging experiments to study the pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position. This position is temporary for one year with the possibility for renewal.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

Lab Support - 60%

* Isolate lung vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells from human and animal specimens.
* Assist with the pharmacological experiments in mice/rats to test the therapeutic potential of drugs to treat pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure.

Research - 30%

* Use combined approaches of patch-clamp technique, calcium fluorescence imaging, and cellular and molecular biological techniques to contribute to the lab manuscripts and grant proposals.
* Data acquisition and analysis, grant and manuscript preparation, presentation of findings during weekly lab meetings.

Lab maintenance - 10%

* Organizing supplies, deliveries, materials or equipment and setting-up equipment for laboratory experiments or demonstrations; may perform minor equipment maintenance.
* Operating laboratory and experimental equipment such as light microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, analytical balances, cell incubators, cell/tissue storage tank; making minor repairs and arrangement for major repairs to be performed.
* Cleaning glassware and other laboratory equipment or materials using appropriate standards; keeping laboratory area clean.

Flexible Work Location Profile

Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

* BA/BS degree or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
* Previous laboratory experience.
* Understanding of basic molecular techniques.
* Excellent written, oral communication and critical thinking skills.
* Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with isolation of primary cells (human, rodent).
* Experience with calcium imaging.
* Knowledge of research and laboratory equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment.
* Ability to use software for statistics such as EXCEL, SigmaPlot, GraphPad, Prism, RedCap.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

* Must be comfortable working in environments that may include close contact with animals, animal byproducts, and related materials.
* Exposure to varying temperatures, outdoor environments, and potential odors or airborne particles related to animal care.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $24.70 - $32.09 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
