Position Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a dedicated, student-centered individual to join our dynamic advising team. The ideal candidate is passionate about serving students and ready to take on more intricate and impactful work within academic advisement. This key position works closely with the School of Engineering Advisement Manager, the ME Advisement Team - part of an award-winning workgroup, ME faculty, and other SoE advisors to provide comprehensive support to prospective, current, and former students.

This advisor will assess academic standing, track students' progress toward degree completion, and assist with course selection, curriculum changes, and long-term planning. They will manage a variety of critical functions, including academic probation advisement, determining eligibility for course overloads, completing athletic eligibility forms, and processing overrides. The advisor will also evaluate transfer credits, evaluate Shared Credit eligibility, certify graduation, manage exceptions to curriculum requirements, and ensure academic records are accurate and up-to-date in Student Hub and related UNM systems.

In addition to day-to-day advising, this role includes presenting at both large and small workshops and orientations, assisting in the coordination of New Student Orientation and retention programs for new and continuing students, and participating in School of Engineering events, which will require weekend work. The advisor may also contribute to curriculum planning, serve on committees, and provide some training for incoming advisors. Professional development is encouraged, and advisors will have opportunities to attend relevant workshops and conferences.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines while producing high-quality work. They should be adaptable, capable of working independently, and skilled in both verbal and written communication. We're looking for someone who will thrive in a collaborative environment, provide excellent student support services, and build strong relationships with students, faculty, and colleagues across the School of Engineering and broader campus community.
