The
Institute for Data, Research and Innovation Science (IDRIS) at Rutgers University-Newark is offering an Interdisciplinary Research Associate position that combines discipline expertise and computational areas, such as data science, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), generative AI and other technology innovations. Key details of this position include:
Focus
Data science and/or statistical methods development addressing questions of health, technology, housing, education, innovation and others impacting national and international urban communities
Responsibilities
- Assist with planning, coordination, and execution of research projects, including collecting and analyzing data (quantitative and/or qualitative).
- Support the preparation and submission of grant proposals, reports, and manuscripts for publication.
- Contribute to research design and may independently manage specific project components, working closely with faculty and those affiliated with IDRIS.
- Coordinate with research partners, vendors, or collaborators; manage resources needed for research (e.g., lab equipment, participant recruitment).
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of research activities and data.
- Provide technical support, train, and occasionally mentor junior staff or research assistants.
Other Duties
- Literature reviews and background research for ongoing and/or new studies.
- Assisting with compliance procedures (e.g., IRB submissions for human subjects research).
- Preparing progress updates, reports for funding agencies, grantors and/or IDRIS and faculty leadership.
- Supervising undergraduate or graduate students, if appropriate.
Additional Information
- The ideal candidate should be an independent, solution-oriented thinker with a strong background in processing very large data sets, applying analytical rigor and statistical methods, and driving toward actionable insights and novel solutions
- Expertise in causal inference and machine learning is desirable but not necessary
- This position offers an excellent opportunity for a research associate to apply and further develop their data science skills in the context of important interdisciplinary data-driven research.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Marketing, Economics, Statistics, Public Administration, Psychology, Industrial/Systems Engineering, or related fields critical to IDRIS
- Experience in analyzing real data
- Strong programming skills
- Familiarity with statistical methods
- Excellent communication and writing skills

- Experience handling very large datasets
