Position can be in Salt Lake City, UT or Durham, NC We are seeking a motivated Legal Counsel to join our Global Center of Excellence for Litigation, with a dedicated focus on day-to-day counseling to our labor, employment, and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) teams located in North America. This role is an excellent opportunity for a newer in career attorney to gain high-impact, in-house experience in a dynamic, global legal team within the diagnostics and life sciences industry. This position reports to the VP & General Counsel, North America and Global Litigation, and will be directly mentored by a Deputy Legal Counsel in the team who also supports North America HR and HSE litigation matters. The successful candidate will partner with Legal, HR, HSE, Compliance, and Business stakeholders to provide practical, business-minded legal support and ensure compliance with evolving laws and regulations in the U.S. and Canada. Key Responsibilities Labor & Employment Legal Support
- Provide legal guidance on day-to-day employment matters such as hiring, performance management, accommodations, and terminations.
- Support HR in navigating federal, state, and provincial labor and employment laws, including ensuring compliance with laws related to wage and hour, leave, discrimination, and harassment.
- Assist with pre-litigation employment claims.
- Provide oversight of internal employee investigations.
- Draft, review, and maintain employment-related documents, including policies, contracts, and severance agreements.
- Monitor changes in employment law and assist with compliance updates and training.
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Legal Support
- Collaborate with HSE and operations teams to advise on regulatory compliance, workplace safety initiatives, and incident response.
- Support OSHA-related legal compliance and reporting.
- Partner with the Deputy Legal Counsel and business stakeholders on risk mitigation and training related to HSE matters.
General Litigation Support & Regional Support
- Support the Global Litigation CoE with pre-litigation assessments, legal hold implementation, document collection, and discovery processes.
- Assist in managing outside counsel for active litigation or investigation matters.
- Contribute to internal case tracking, budgeting, and legal operations processes.
- Participate in internal investigations, risk mitigation planning, and dispute strategy development.
- Contribute to other legal matters or initiatives as assigned, including support to regional and global legal teams based on business needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; admitted to a U.S. state bar in good standing.
- 2+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally with some exposure to labor, employment, or workplace safety law.
- Prior in-house or law firm experience supporting regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, life sciences, manufacturing) is a plus.
- Interest in developing expertise in global in-house practice, particularly employment and compliance topics.
