The Opportunity

The Animal Technician will perform daily milking of dairy animals, deep cleaning of respiration chambers and spot cleaning chambers and monitor rooms as needed. Cleaning cows to maintain their health through sponge bathing, brushing, or clipping hair is also required. Additionally, the role involves cleaning the lab and hallways after sampling, and collecting various samples such as body weights, blood, ascites, urine, feces, and methane, while assisting with procedures as needed. The Technician must adhere to animal care protocols. Monitoring duties include occasional "catheter watch" to prevent animals from chewing their IV lines and watching over lambs or calves as necessary. The work is performed at the Large Animal Research/Teaching Unit (LARTU) but may be needed to fill in staffing gaps at CURC and other facilities depending on labor demands.

We're looking for someone comfortable with a dynamic schedule. During the first month, shifts will include afternoons and late nights (including occasional hours between midnight and 2 AM). After training, the role will settle into a more consistent routine with morning and late afternoon hours.

This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York.

The work hours are afternoon and evenings.

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratoryand companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agricultureand human health. Ourinternationally recognized faculty have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, growth biology and microbiology.

What We Need

  • High school diploma and up to 6 months relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must possess excellent attention to detail and be able to ensure compliance with regulations and procedures.
  • Experience with dairy cows, lambs, and calves; understanding of animal behavior.
  • Familiarity with milking equipment and protocols.
  • Ability to assist with vaccinations and blood draws.
  • Basic aptitude of sanitation and animal equipment operation.
  • Effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures, observations, and results, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to the necessary information.
  • Able to respond quickly and address queries and requests from different project teams in a timely manner, ensuring smooth workflow and collaboration.
  • Able to understand and communicate project requirements, deadlines, and any changes to avoid misunderstandings and ensure alignment.
  • Able to adapt to changing demands is essential for managing multiple projects. This involves:
  • Able to assess and prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance, ensuring that critical deadlines are met.
  • Able to shift focus between projects as priorities change, and handle unexpected challenges or changes in project scope.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills; think on their feet and develop creative solutions to overcome obstacles and ensure project continuity.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician Degree, Animal Technician Certification, or related field, or higher.
  • Experience working in a research setting.
