Minimum Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and learn new laboratory techniques.
- Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends as research requires.
- Experience with data collection, entry and management.
Preferred Experience:
- Master's degree or higher in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Nutrition, or a closely related field.
- Two or more years of direct experience in research operations at a higher education institution.
- Knowledge and experience working with human subjects and/or athletes.
- Research experience in sport science, nutrition, or cardiovascular physiology/assessment.
- Wet bench laboratory experience, including ELISA methodology.
- Experience managing and mentoring research assistants.
- Scientific writing experience; prior publications preferred.
- Advanced professional certifications such as NSCA CSCS and/or ACSM EPC.
- Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire).

Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
The Temporary Research Specialist (Laboratory Manager) supports and reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) in all aspects of human subject research, laboratory management, and data oversight. Responsibilities include subject recruitment, data collection, data management, laboratory maintenance, and biospecimen handling. The Research Specialist serves as a key resource for the PI and is responsible for day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with safety, research integrity, and university policies.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Support the PI in the collection and management of human subject data, including electronic surveys, demographic, metabolic, and cardiovascular assessments.
* Manage and maintain laboratory operations, including inventory, equipment, and biospecimen handling.
* Recruit, schedule, and coordinate research participants in compliance with
IRB and ethical standards.
* Collect, enter, and manage research data with accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity.
* Train and oversee junior research assistants in laboratory and data collection protocols.
* Ensure compliance with university, state, and federal research and safety regulations.
* Assist with scientific writing, including reports, grant applications, and publications.
* Perform additional duties as assigned by the PI. |
Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences (
HCHHS) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The
HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level,
HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (
MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and PhD in Social Work, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nurse Practice (
DNP). The
HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (
CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The
HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity. The Department of Kinesiology is one of the largest departments on campus with current enrollment of approximately 700 students.
The Department of Kinesiology trains evidence-based professionals, meeting the needs of people who are apparently healthy, at risk, and with known disease(s). The Kinesiology faculty possess a wide depth of knowledge in areas such as physical therapy, exercise science, adaptive physical education, sports management, recreation and leisure studies, exercise immunology, health and wellness, nutrition and community health. We currently offer a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Kinesiology with three concentrations : (1) Exercise Science, (2) Recreation Sport Management, and (3) Preprofessional . Kinesiology graduates are prepared to pursue entry level positions within the sport and recreation management, rehabilitation, recreation, and healthcare fields. The Kinesiology degree also prepares students who desire to pursue advanced graduate degrees in disciplines such as athletic training, physical therapy, sport management, public health, occupational therapy, recreation and leisure studies and more. |
