Overall Purpose:

Under semi-direct supervision, to perform highly skilled heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration maintenance, repair and installation work.



Job Responsibilities:



  • Inspect, cleans, oils, replaces parts, repairs, maintains, rebuilds, and installs refrigerators, water coolers, deep freezers, heat pumps, ice machines, electronic air cleaners, air conditioners, air handlers, chillers, dry coolers, economizers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, motor starters, sequencers, solid state controls, vent dampers, heat reclaim systems, specialized refrigeration systems, similar refrigeration equipment, and associated fire protection relays.
  • Troubleshoots, tears down, rebuilds, rewires and reassembles above equipment as required.
  • Repairs or replaces compressors and internal compressor parts, pistons, vanes, strainers, crank shafts, bearings, valves, seals, gaskets, oil pumps, heaters, unloaders, access valves and any other parts associated with all types of compressors.
  • Repairs or replaces the following condenser parts: coils, fins, blower motors, fan blades, water cooling tubes, cooling water regulating valves, circulating pumps, cooling towers, dry coolers, motor master controls and similar equipment. Checks the specific gravity of glycol in closed systems and adjusts as necessary.
  • Repairs or replaces the following evaporator parts: capillary tubes, thermostatic expansion valves, actuators, and similar metering devices, coils, fins, blower motors, fan blades, solenoid valves, water tubes, circulating pumps, freezer plates, ice maker plates and similar equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces the following refrigerant piping and controls: liquid lines, suction lines, accumulators, filter-driers, receivers, sight glasses, reversing valves, check valves, expansion valves, oil separators, mufflers, bypass valves, pressure regulators, strainers and similar equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces the following electrical parts: contactors, motor starters, current relays, potential relays, high and low pressure controls, defrost controls, capacitors, solid state motor controllers, fuses, circuit breakers, limit controls, electronic and bimetal type thermostats, sequencers, PC boards, transformers, fire stats, thermostats, humidistats, auto-flush controls, proportional actuating motors, triacs, alarms, time clocks, micro- switches, safety controls, and similar equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces the following air handling and air cleaning parts: blowers, pulleys, belts, bearings, motors, high voltage transformers, ionizing wires, diodes, rectifiers, insulators, time clocks, pumps, humidifiers, heating elements, electronic air cleaner cells, solid state controls, non-sealed motor/compressor lubrication systems and similar equipment.
  • Does painting, touches up air conditioning units, structures and insulation repair/replacement in units and localized ducts.
  • Adjusts and sets time clocks on air conditioning, heating and electronic air cleaner wash systems.
  • Operates special vehicles such as platform truck, bucket truck, forklift, and other lifting type equipment normally used in this work.
  • Works with hazardous and toxic materials.
  • Is responsible for own and crew safety in the absence of direct supervision.
  • Performs brazing, silver solder and solder operations during HVAC unit repair and installations.
  • At times instructs and directs the work of others.
  • Performs other work related to the above as required or assigned.



Education / Experience Requirements:



  • High school graduate or GED equivalent plus two (2) years technical school certificate education in air conditioning and refrigeration, including related electronic control courses or the equivalent.
  • Three (3) years or more experience in the HVACR equipment maintenance repair and installation,
  • Must pass the company administered standardized aptitude test (CAST).
  • Strong knowledge of tools of the trade and with modern methods of repair and installation for equipment as listed above.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and work from prints, schematics, specifications, maintenance manuals and National Electrical Code and other applicable standards.
  • Ability to instruct and to direct the work of others.
  • Working knowledge of safety rules and practices related to HVACR work.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (1 year to obtain)
