Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Insurance Services Supervisor, responsible for direct service of the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP). Coordinate the waiver process, counsel students on eligibility and benefits, provide accurate information regarding eligibility and benefit limitations to students and parents, process referrals to outside consultant offices, input referral information into the practice management computer system and generate referral numbers. Provide administrative support to the Insurance Services Department and answer the main telephone lines for UC SHIP questions and referrals.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with medical and dental insurance plans and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy when interpreting insurance language: HMO's, PPO's, benefits, deductibles, copays, maximum benefits, coverage limitations and eligibility requirements.
  • Customer service experience with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a diverse group of individuals and address complaints and problems.
  • Experience with all aspects of State and Federal laws regarding proper release of medical information; knowledge of State and Federal law to determine which law is more stringent and thus which law to follow in order to comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Experience using a medical practice management system and various electronic databases.
  • Experience working with a culturally diverse workforce and constituency.
  • Knowledge of appropriate documentation of medical records, specifically recognizing special diagnoses of mental health, drug and alcohol, and HIV related information.
  • Knowledge of health insurance and medical terminology procedures and industry standards. Interpersonal, oral and written skills to communicate in person, by telephone and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working independently and as a team without direct supervision, exercising independent judgment and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge of the policies and procedures of eligibility requirements for the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP).
  • Skills to independently coordinate multiple, diverse and simultaneous projects, maintaining accuracy and efficiency while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Organizational, analytical, and time management skills to coordinate the administration of complex interrelated tasks, to problem solve, to prioritize workload, and to compile, organize and report information.
  • Analytical and investigative skills to elicit information to clarify inquiries and requests.

Department Overview

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides primary care, mental health, acute care, laboratory, pharmacy, health education and counseling services to registered UC Davis students. SHCS serves approximately 300 patients per day during the school year. The mission is to provide campus health and wellness resources that enable students to successfully achieve their academic goals and life-long wellness. SHCS has approximately 200 staff including managers, senior professionals, professional and support staff, student employees, interns and post doc residents. SHCS is accredited by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care), and IACS (International Association for Counseling Services). SHCS Counseling Services are staffed by an educationally diverse group of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, Masters level therapists, and pre-and post-doctoral trainees, dedicated to assisting students and enriching the university community by providing individual counseling, group services, educational programs, psychological consultation, workshops, and other types of outreach services. Counseling services are offered at no cost to registered students.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
