Job Summary

The Executive Director (ED) of the UCDCCC's Office of Education, Training, and Workforce Development (ETWD) is a strategic partner to Cancer Center and enterprise-wide leadership. They are responsible for strategically developing the vision for dynamic cancer-relevant academic training and education programs across the continuum spanning from junior high school to early stage investigators. The Executive Director independently manages all aspects of cancer research training and education programs, including strategic planning, policy setting, process development, and impact analysis. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Masters degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive responsible business experience in an academic or research environment.
  • Strong leadership, team building, and problem-solving skills as well as demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, policy creation, and implementing programs to drive forward vision and mission.
  • Strong project management skills including the ability to develop and implement short and long-range plans and strategies by applying trends and projections to achieve goals and desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to identify and define issues and alternatives, to resolve problems, and to draw sound conclusions where none have existed. Ability to make recommendations for improvements and implement them.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to obtain and convey information accurately and clearly.
  • Skillful in overseeing staff, including but not limited to recruiting and retaining skilled individuals, assigning and overseeing work, setting clear expectations, providing timely feedback, managing performance issues, mentoring, and aiding staff members grow professionally.
  • Demonstrated excellence in independently prioritizing and organizing projects, meeting all deadlines, while successfully balancing a high-volume workload. Superior organizational skills with extreme attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to develop, nurture and maintain positive relationships with individuals at all organizational levels, including external institutional senior leaders, faculty, staff, students, vendors, etc. Treats everyone with respect and actively engenders a positive and collaboration environment.
  • Demonstrated high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.).
  • Ability to quickly master new database systems and tools.
  • Knowledge of training and education programs at UCDCCC.
  • Must be willing to have a flexible work schedule, and to accommodate meeting schedules and deadlines at various times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Proven experience and expertise in managing, developing, and evaluating educational programs.
  • Knowledge of the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines.
  • Prior experience with and knowledge of federal educations requirements, including those of the NCI/NIH.
  • Knowledge of pertinent policies, procedures, regulations and requirements of UC, State, Federal, and other agencies pertaining to research and administrative management of grants and contracts.
  • Knowledge of University of California policies with regard to research administration, finances, and human resources.

Department Overview

The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) is a matrix organization under the aegis of UC Davis Health and University of California, Davis. Designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Center is a clinical and research enterprise consisting of ~260 faculty members from the Davis, Sacramento, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory campuses with research funding totaling $58M and a robust Clinical Research Program with over 200 trials (Phase I-III) open to accrual at any given time.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Executive Director for the Education, Training and Workforce Development (ETWD) Office works directly with the Associate Director for Education, Training and Workforce Development, ETWD Assistant Directors, and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to accomplish the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center's (UCDCCC) mission and vision. In alignment with the UCDCCC Strategic Plan, the ETWD Office is an integrated organizational hub that coordinates and communicates education and training activities, prioritizes the recruitment and retention of the oncology workforce, provides cancer research training and education coordination (CRTEC) activities to the full spectrum of cancer scholars, coordinates and implements new initiatives; and evaluates the impact and quality of CRTEC activities to improve the existing program and to drive the development of new CRTEC activities.
