BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Paralegal II City of Chicago Police Department Legal Affairs Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $66, 612.00 This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Select your correct bargaining unit FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 09/15/2025 Under supervision, functions at the senior level, providing paraprofessional legal and administrative support to attorneys, and performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Assists the Law Department and outside counsel with fulfilling discovery requests, processing legal preservation requests, and reviewing and preparing subpoena responses * Assists attorneys in all phases of pre-trial, trial, and post-trial functions, including those ranging from a routine to a complex nature * Collects and organizes Department records, reports, and legal documents to respond to subpoenas and requests for information related to civil trials, criminal prosecutions, or Office of Inspector General (OIG) requests * Prepares and summarizes legal documents for attorney use (e.g., summonses, motions, subpoenas) * Facilitates reviews of files by attorneys from the Law Department or outside counsel * Prepares and writes documents for answers and discovery and updates relevant parties on status of discovery * Prepares and maintains documents associated with discovery requests, legal preservations, and OIG requests * Reviews documents collected and produced in response to subpoenas to ensure compliance with privacy and juvenile laws * Trains and orientates paralegal staff in office methods and procedures, as required * Utilizes eDiscovery and legal hold databases to manage, track, and collect Department records and reports in response to discovery requests or legal hold preservation requests * Notarizes documents, as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and a paralegal certificate from a paralegal training program accredited by the American Bar Association, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience NOTE: Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: * Previous experience in a law enforcement or law firm/corporate law department setting. * Previous experience with legal systems, legal filings, and legal research. * Basic understanding of legal terminology.
