Essential Job Duties
NC State is seeking an editor in chief ( EIC) for the award-winning NC State Magazine to lead the strategic and operational aspects of the magazine - from big-picture, long-range planning, to all phases of the magazine cycle, to oversight and execution of the finer points that make NC State Magazine best in class. In addition, the EIC manages the magazine team, serves as a resource to university leadership, and facilitates a strong working relationship with the University Communications team.
Ultimately, the EIC will strengthen the alumni, campus and greater Wolfpack communities and their connection to NC State through the magazine while showcasing and amplifying the varied voices and perspectives of alumni, faculty/staff and students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Editorial strategy (30%)

  • Develop, execute, and continually refine NC State Magazine's editorial strategy in fulfillment of the University's mission.
  • Continually strengthen NC State Magazine's credibility as a trusted information source that strengthens community among alumni, reinforcing their connection to the University.
  • Cultivate and nurture NC State Magazine's distinct character, style, voice and aesthetic.


Audience strategy (20%)

  • Know the audience and continually deepen the magazine's understanding of the audience's sensibilities and passions-what they care about, what they need to care about, what excites them, what strikes a chord, and what engages them.
  • Expand the magazine's reach and readership by optimizing existing channels (i.e., print, digital) and exploring new ones.

Operations (20%)

  • Planning and ideation: Engage in long-range, mid-range, and more immediate and time-sensitive planning of print magazine editions, which are produced three times a year, content for the magazine's website, digital media, content packages, special projects, and special issues.
  • Story development: In close collaboration with the magazine team and NC State leadership, develop and assign story ideas, work with writers on information gathering, edit and review copy.
  • Presentation: Take the lead in overseeing and crafting the magazine's power to engage, including working closely with the art director on cover designs, composing cover lines, the table of contents, headlines, photo captions, pull quotes, and the magazine's other display copy.
  • Team management: Lead and manage a high-performing, creative, energetic and collaborative team, see to team members' professional fulfillment, engagement, and positive morale.
  • Business management: The EIC has P&L responsibility for NC State Magazine.

Facilitate a strong working relationship with the University's Communications team. (20%)

  • Build strong trust and rapport with university leadership in balance with editorial responsibilities.
  • Serve as the key point of contact for University Communications; conduct regular check-in meetings with university stakeholders.
  • Proactively stay informed of key university-wide/alumni-facing communications, especially during crisis response; when necessary, factor into NC State Magazine timing and publication.
  • When potential areas of conflict arise, actively surface issues to leadership and seek a productive resolution.

Management (10%)

  • Conduct all aspects of the role with honor and journalistic integrity with a high level of diplomacy.
  • Foster a sense of belonging by being open to ideas and insights of fellow team members across the NC State and the university.
  • Be open to supporting new initiatives and other duties as strategic and business priorities evolve.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including technical and non-technical writing and presentation skills.

Other Responsibilities

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.


Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous years of direct experience in journalism, publishing, marketing communications, or advertising, preferably in higher education.
  • Direct and extensive experience with the production and editorial cycles of NC State Magazine.
  • A proven track record of contributing to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of NC State Magazine, including its print and digital edition
  • Experienced and highly skilled in a mix of the following: planning and budgeting, creative thinking, idea conception, problem-solving, writing and editing, advertising, client relations, print design, web design, digital media, and project management.
  • Must have excellent grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
  • Proven track record as a leader of a high-performing team with the ability to coach, provide support, and develop team members to meet their personal, and professional needs in concert with the needs of the university.
  • Advanced proficiency with existing technologies including MS Office, project management tools and the ability to evolve as new technologies (software/hardware) are implemented.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail and deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Mac OSX and Windows desktop environments
  • Ability to work independently, to be creative and exercise initiative
  • Unquestioned integrity in dealing with confidential information
  • Open and accessible interpersonal style; good listener
  • Must have an eye for design yet always keep the reader in mind as the ultimate consumer of our product.

Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment.
