Job Summary

The Orientation and Family Programs is currently seeking a reliable Student Orientation Leader Coordinator to join their team of professionals. The following is a summary of the expectations of Peer Advisor Coordinators:

A. Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Actively model behaviors that always meet and exceed office and team standards.
  • Hold all team members (including yourself) accountable to the expectations in place, including, but not limited to, the Fraternity and Sorority Life policy.
  • Communicate between the team and the office staff as needed to reinforce a positive team environment and share important information.
  • Have necessary conversations with team members to facilitate conflict resolution or address behaviors that are negatively impacting the team.
  • Provide consistent encouragement, support, and constructive feedback to the team with the goals of the office in mind, even when away from the office or official office settings.
  • Create and implement strategies and programs to maintain motivation during training and orientation sessions.

B. Educational Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning all trainings, retreat, and all other requirements.
  • Communicate information to students about academic resources, activities & services available at FIU.
  • Educate the Orientation Leaders and incoming students about their responsibilities at FIU by explaining university, office, and team policies and procedures.
  • Assist academic advisors with providing students an understanding of academic requirements.
  • Help Peer Advisors understand all logistical information to assist them in their role as a Orientation Leader.
  • Prepare and coach Orientation Leader on how to conduct well-organized and thorough small group meetings, debriefs, and campus tours (in-person and/or virtual) for new students and family members.
  • Living in residence hall but not performing the work of Housing Residential Life (HRL).

C. Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Welcome new students and families to FIU and assist them with check-in, Zoom and/or computer lab troubleshooting, etc.
  • Develop a rapport with new students and their families.
  • Help new students acclimate to campus, to feel welcome, and get involved in the FIU community.
  • Be available and willing to answer questions of students and families throughout each orientation session.
  • Assist students with academic decision-making.
  • Always serve as an academic and social role model to Orientation Leaders and incoming students.

D. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning training sessions, meetings, and retreats.
  • Arrive early to help with set up for all Orientation activities including trainings, meetings, and orientation sessions.
  • Complete all logistical tasks as requested by the Orientation staff to ensure the program proceeds smoothly.
  • Maintain regular communications with all Orientation supervisors and discuss with them situations that warrant their attention or action.
  • Fully participate in all assigned duties of orientation and take initiative with unanticipated tasks or problems.
  • Assist all presenters at scheduled programs, meetings, and sessions throughout Orientation.
  • Be supportive of all staff members on the Orientation staff (Orientation Leaders and Panther Camp Facilitators)
  • Respond appropriately to feedback and evaluations.
  • Always remain flexible and positive; last-minute as well as major programmatic changes may occur.
Minimum Qualifications

Customer service knowledge

None to basic level of Microsoft Word.

Ability to take direction and work independently as needed.

Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
  • Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule

Schedule varies based on departments needs & student schedule. 20 hour per week maximum.

$15.00/hour
