One of these courses is an introductory lecture about the history of television (FMS 0006 Television History) that covers the development of U.S. broadcasting--its industrial, technical, aesthetic, cultural and formal developments--up to the end of the network era. The second is a more advanced seminar about post-network television (FMS 0165 Television in the Age of Change) that examines how new technologies and viewing habits are transforming television and televisual storytelling, as well as theories of audiences, styles, and viewing pleasures. The third is a mid-level lecture about media theory (FMS 0044 Introduction to Media Culture and Theory) that explores the major areas of study, theoretical principles, methodologies, and debates that have shaped popular media studies. The fourth course may be in TV Studies or a related area in Film & Media Studies of the candidate's choice.
