| Essential Job Duties |
The Senior Research Scholar position will primarily research enzyme mechanisms, structure, and physical organic chemistry pertaining to enzyme catalyzed reactions with the aim of developing novel biocatalysts.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Research
- Serve as lead or co-lead researcher to oversee complex research projects and develop new lines of scientific investigation with an emphasis on mechanistic enzymology, enzyme kinetics, natural product biosynthesis and chemical biology consistent with the principal aims of the laboratory.
- Design and execute experiments, conduct quantitative analysis of data to ensure integrity of results and prepare of periodic reports and presentations on progress made to date.
- Prepare manuscripts and work with the principal investigator to design and write new funding applications.
Supervision and Training
- Provide guidance and critical evaluation of graduate student research projects and progress in order to ensure timely success and maximize the efficient use of students' time.
- Participate in literature review and develop presentations to familiarize group members with existing and new techniques, methodologies and theoretical concepts.
Engagement with External Constituencies
- Engage with outside constituencies on collaborative projects in order to keep all participants informed and appraised of recent developments and progress.
- Participate in meetings, give presentations, prepare formal reports and write manuscripts.
Innovation
- Responsible for the development and validation of any new technological processes, methodologies or software necessary for the completion of relevant projects and efficient operation of the laboratory.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with at least five years postdoctoral experience working in the fields of mechanistic enzymology and organic chemistry.

| Other Required Qualifications |
The ideal candidate should have the following required skills:
- Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrable experience with physical organic chemistry, enzyme kinetics, quantitative data analysis, hypothesis testing via statistical methods, numerical analysis and simulation of kinetic results as well as a strong background in the theory and application of kinetic isotope effects applied to enzyme catalyzed reactions.
- Be familiar with the basic principles and techniques associated with computational chemistry, DNA manipulation, use of E. coli as a heterologous expression system as well as protein purification and assay.

| Preferred Qualifications |
Candidates with the following experience and qualifications will be given priority in the selection process:
- Experience mentoring graduate students, preparation of funding applications (e.g., National Institutes of Health), experience in medical practice, a demonstrated record in software development and testing, as well as prior work with gene cloning, site directed mutagenesis and plasmid design.
- Familiarity with the techniques of molecular phylogeny and the bioinformatic analysis of protein and DNA sequences is desirable as is a background in mathematics.
- Experience with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography .
- Experience presenting their research at international symposia.
Candidates possessing the Doctor of Medicine degree are highly desirable as such individuals have first-hand experience of medical practice and how the study of enzyme chemistry can be leveraged to identify and develop new medicines of practical value.
