Summary of Position Under minimal supervision, coordinates oversees and performs routine and specialized activities related to the operation of the FISH laboratory. Develops protocols, coordinates workflow, and oversees quality control in specialized areas of the laboratory. Demonstrates proficiency in sample preparation, hybridization, washing, microscopic analysis of interphase nuclei/metaphase cells, and imaging. Key Job Elements
- Microscopic Analysis: Analyzes interphase and metaphase nuclei for hematological abnormalities, Her2/neu amplification, and numerical abnormalities identified by FISH.Must be able to read at least 60 probes per day.
- Reports:Assist in the preparation of reports as needed by the laboratory director.
- Washing and Handling of FISH slides: Has knowledge of and follows the appropriate protocols for the washing and handling of FISH slides.
- Imaging: Has prior experience with capturing platforms to image and enhance the appropriate cell type and number for each case.
- LIS:Familiar with a laboratory information system to enter results, look up patient data, make necessary entries, and run any required reports.
- Training:Participates in training programs for new employees, including a written training guide/plan.Train new employees and other technologists in all aspects of FISH testing. Ensure trainees and other techs read and sign off on applicable policies and procedures.Monitor trainees to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Staffing:Assist in the interviewing process for vacant positions and in the selection of new employees for the FISH laboratory.
- Professional Development: Attends in-services, reads professional literature, participates in continuing educational opportunities, and remains abreast of developments in the fields of cytogenetics, FISH, and oncology.
- Safety:All safety policies and procedures are followed.This includes chemical, electrical, fire, and ergonomic safety as well as blood-borne pathogen procedures.
- Charts and Records: Records pertinent laboratory data on the appropriate form or chart to ensure accurate and complete documentation of laboratory findings.
- Quality Control: Complies with quality control policies and procedures to ensure that all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.
- Quality Assurance:Assist with ensuring compliance with quality control policies and procedures.Ensure testing is performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.Assist with the documentation and presentation of QA/QC at monthly meetings.
- Miscellaneous:Performs other duties as specified by supervisor.
Additional Job Functions Specific to Technologist III
- Protocol Development:Assists in the development of new protocols.Identifies ways in which laboratory procedures and activities can be modified to improve upon current methodologies.
- Validations:Participates in the validation of new test, compiles the statistical data and prepares validation reports.Participates in on-going validations as required by regulatory agencies.
- Work Flow Evaluation:Looks for and suggests improvements in laboratory work flow to reduce costs, reduce turn around time, improve specimen quality or improve patient care.
- Resource:Acts as a technical resource for less experienced personnel regarding laboratory procedures.
- Supervision:Provides feedback for the evaluation of FISH Technologists levels I and II.Can step in during the absence of the FISH supervisor to evaluate new specimens for set up, provide technical answers to clinicians, enter reports, etc.
- Can perform all the tasks of FISH Technologist I and II.
Qualifications
Knowledge/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Life Science.
- At minimum 5 years experience in a FISH laboratory.
- ASCP certified in Cytogenetics.
- Laboratory personnel participating in licensure or certification maintenance programs must complete the number of continuing education hours prescribed by their licensing or certifying agency.
- Technical laboratory personnel whose certification has been grandfathered and does not require participation in a certification maintenance program must complete at least twelve hours of continuing education annually.
