The Director of Actuarial Services will play a critical leadership role within the UHG Trend Analytics team, driving the development and execution of Medical Trend Forecasting (TFM) processes for Optum Health. This position is responsible for developing, maintaining, and running quarterly medical expense forecasting processes that promote consistency, transparency, and collaboration across UnitedHealth Group. The ideal candidate will leverage best-in-class actuarial trend methodologies to provide accurate, actionable insights that support strategic decision-making enterprise-wide.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Director in this role will work with detailed health care claims data to build and maintain actuarial models to support forecasting.

  • Lead the design, enhancement, and execution of quarterly medical expense forecasting processes (TFM) for Optum Health
  • Develop standardized methodologies and frameworks to ensure consistent measurement and reporting of medical cost trends across business segments
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams-including finance, operations, data analytics, and other actuarial units-to foster transparency and alignment in forecasting practices
  • Ensure all trend analytics adhere to industry best practices while driving innovation in model development and process improvement
  • Deliver timely forecasts and comprehensive reports to key stakeholders; communicate results clearly with actionable recommendations
  • Monitor emerging market trends, regulatory changes, and internal data insights to continuously refine forecasting approaches
  • Mentor junior actuarial staff; contribute to talent development within the team
  • Support ad-hoc analytic requests related to medical expense trends as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related field
  • Credentialed Actuary (FSA or ASA)
  • 8+ years of experience in health care actuarial roles with progressive leadership responsibility including managed care/payer environments
  • Demonstrated expertise developing standardized analytic methodologies using large health care datasets
  • Proven excellent communication skills with ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to both technical audiences and senior leadership
  • Experience collaborating across matrixed organizations
  • Analytic expertise to identify relevant and actionable study components
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, and experience designing and running complex data programs (e.g., extract and analyze data via SAS, SQL, Python, R, Power BI, VBA, predictive modeling)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on high-performing teams within matrixed organizations or large payers/providers
  • Demonstrated ability to influence strategy through data-driven insights at senior levels
  • Experience in Healthcare Consulting
  • Experience as a people and project manager including project management and business development
  • Located within a 30-minute commute of our Eden Prairie, MN office

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
