Job Overview

The Medical Assistant Apprentice plays a vital role in supporting healthcare delivery by assisting physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals in clinical and administrative tasks. This apprenticeship offers hands-on experience in a healthcare setting while the apprentice completes formal education through an accredited Medical Assistant Certification program. Apprentices will gain exposure to patient care, medical procedures, and office operations, preparing them for a successful career as a Certified Medical Assistant.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Location/Department: Anschutz Medical Center (various departments)
  • Job Information: Approximately 32 hours/week -- eligible for benefits. This position is temporary for one year only.
  • Shift Details: 4x8 hour shifts
    • - Monday - Academic learning at established institution
      - Tuesday - Anschutz Medical Center
      - Wednesday - Anschutz Medical Center
      - Thursday - Anschutz Medical Center
      - Friday - Off

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

1. Patient Intake & Vital Signs - assist with patient check-in, obtain vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration ), and document medical history.
2. Clinical Support - Prepare patients for examinations, assist with procedures, and ensure exam rooms are clean and stocked.
3. Electronic Health Records (EHR) - Accurately enter patient data into EHR systems and maintain confidentiality of medical records.
4. Specimen Collection - Collect and label specimens (e.g., blood, urine) for laboratory testing following proper protocols.
5. Medication Administration - Administer medications as directed by licensed providers under supervision and document appropriately.
6. Patient Communication - Provide clear instructions to patients regarding medications, procedures, and follow-up care.
7. Appointment Scheduling - Schedule patient appointments, follow-ups, and referrals using scheduling software.
8. Inventory Management - Monitor and replenish medical supplies and equipment in exam rooms and storage areas.
9. Infection Control - Follow infection control procedures including sterilization, hand hygiene, and use of PPE.
10. Billing & Coding Support - Assist with basic medical billing and coding tasks under supervision.
11. Team Collaboration - Work collaboratively with clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow and quality care.
12. Professional Development - Participate in training sessions, evaluations, and mentorship activities as part of the apprenticeship program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Actively enrolled in an accredited Medical Assistant Certification Program. Preference for Front Range Community College current or future enrolled students.
Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire.

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. Hourly Range: $15.93 to $23.90. For this role, the Apprentice will start at $17/hour and will receive progressive wage increases based on successful completion of training phases and demonstrated competency. See the table below for additional information. Advancement through phases is contingent upon meeting performance benchmarks, completing required on-the-job learning and related instruction, and maintaining good standing in the program.
