JOB SUMMARY

The Office of the General Counsel serves a critical role and maintains strong relationships throughout the organization. The Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice, counsel, leadership, and oversight for a wide range of legal matters affecting FHI 360 and its subsidiaries. Such matters include but are not limited to corporate governance and transactions; tax exempt status and fundraising; contracts and commercial transactions; patent, trademark, and copyright; data privacy; and risk management. The Associate General Counsel will report to the General Counsel and serve as an integral member of the high performing legal team.

RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

Complexity & Problem Solving:

  • Serves as the legal liaison to organizational units and senior executives on legal, administrative and management issues.

  • Provides legal advice and counsel to a range of staff members, including members of the Executive Team.

  • Manages outside counsel, tracks relevant legal developments, formulates courses of action, drafts correspondence and /or policies and procedures to resolve legal, procedural, or administrative issues and ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Finds opportunities to advance the organization in complex areas and mitigate legal risk.

  • Leads efforts across the organization, including but not limited to legal staff, operations staff, and communications staff, to keep them abreast of and enlist their support for priority initiatives.

  • Interacts with funding, government, and regulatory agencies to represent the interests of the organization.

  • Through everyday actions, contributes to an organizational culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and a dedication to social change, and commitment to improvement and innovation.

  • Supports the legal, management, and risk assessment work.

  • Ensures proper filing of relevant legal records.

  • Engages in projects and performs other duties assigned.

Management & Supervision:

  • Supervises and coordinates all vital legal services in assigned matters, in conjunction with in-house or outside legal counsel as required.

  • Supervises legal administrative staff.

  • Reports to the General Counsel of the company.

  • Embraces other duties as assigned, contributing to the team's multifaceted and evolving responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Industry knowledge in one or more of the organizations areas of work (i.e., international development, clinical research facilitation).

  • Strategic problem solver, who can provide pragmatic legal advice in a complex environment, with shifting priorities and multiple constituencies.

  • Ability to lead multiple priorities with limited resources.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to balance competing demands and advance departmental objectives swiftly.

  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor or its International Equivalent from a recognized school of law. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Typically requires 7+ years of experience with a law firm, corporate legal department, or organization, including 3+ years of leadership and/or line management experience.

  • Validated legal expertise in two or more relevant areas and curiosity about learning more (corporate governance and transactions; tax exempt status and fundraising; contracts and commercial transactions; patent, trademark, and copyright; data privacy; and risk management.)

  • Prior in-house legal department experience strongly preferred.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in one or more jurisdictions within the United States.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Typical office environment. Constantly uses a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

TECHNOLOGY

Computer/Laptop, Microsoft applications (i.e., Office 365, SharePoint, Skype/Zoom/Teams), cell phone/mobile technology, and standard office equipment.

The expected US Based hiring salary range for this role is listed below. Candidates FHI 360 pay ranges represent national averages that vary by geographic location. When determining an offer amount, FHI 360 factors in multiple considerations, including but not limited to: relevant years of experience and education possessed by the applicant, internal equity, business sector, and budget.

Base salary is only one component of our offer. FHI 360 contributes 7% of monthly base pay to a money purchase pension plan account. Additionally, all US based staff working full-time, which is calculated at 40 hours/week, receive 18 days of paid vacation per year, 12 sick days per year, and 11 holidays per year. Paid time off is reduced pro rata for employees working less than a full-time schedule.

US Based Hiring Salary Range: USD 155,000 - 200,000 annually

International hiring ranges will differ based on location
