Job Summary (Primary function)

The Senior Scientist Preformulation, Pharmaceutical Development provides pre-formulation and formulation support to discovery programs in the pre-clinical phase. This role serves as an interface between Discovery and Pharmaceutical Development.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

* Perform hands-on pre-formulation and formulation development for new small molecules in collaboration with Discovery.

* Characterize the physical and chemical properties of the drug candidate in collaboration with Chemistry.

* Leverage the physical/chemical and pharmacokinetic properties of the drug candidate to develop formulation strategies and options which include required resources to develop a clinical formulation.

* Manufacture lab scale suspensions, granulations, spray-dried dispersions, hot melts, tablets and other formulations utilizing bench-top equipment to support toxicology studies and clinical formulation development.

* Utilize animal models to screen formulations in collaboration with DMPK when appropriate.

* Maintain good documentation for laboratory experiments. Prepare data summaries and reports in collaboration with Discovery.

* Perform analytical testing and/or collaborate with analytical scientist. Analyze and interpret experimental data to form sound conclusions.

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

* Degree (such as Ph.D. with at least 3 years of related experience; or MS with at least 5 years of related experience; or BS with at least 7 years of related experience) in pharmaceutical sciences or related field required.

* Experience with new small molecules at early stage of pipeline is required.

* Hands-on experience with preclinical formulation development and analytical testing. Experience with poorly soluble compounds is advantageous.

* In-depth understanding of preformulation and bioavailability enhancing formulation concepts.

* Knowledge of pharmacokinetics. Experience with Gastro-plus or similar PK modeling software is advantageous.

* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

* Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of team members from Discovery and Pharmaceutical Development.

* Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.

* Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
