In 2022, businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford committed $150 million to the creation of the Sanford Stem Cell Institute at UC San Diego. This gift combines current infrastructure with new Centers intended to leverage the advantages of space-based science, including expansion and, in some ways, quite literally launch stem cell research and regenerative medicine at UC San Diego into new spaces, endeavors, and training of future stem cell scientists.

Sanford Stem Cell Institute provides essential physical and human resources needed to leverage stem cell research currently being conducted at UC San Diego. Due to the complexity of regenerative medicine projects and substantial institutional investment, daily Sanford Stem Cell Institute personnel work with all 9 Vice Chancellor areas: Academic Affairs; Research Affairs; Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion; Student Affairs; Marine Sciences; Health Sciences; Health System; Chief Financial Officer; Advancement; Resource Management and Planning.

As part of UC San Diego, Sanford Stem Cell Institute motivates University-wide change, sustainability, and partnership, focusing on creating the structure under which various innovative regenerative medicine units and initiatives are developed.

The new UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Institute builds upon a $100 million gift in 2013 from T. Denny Sanford that established UC San Diego as a leader in developing and delivering the therapeutic promise of human stem cells - special cells with the ability to develop into many different cell types and which, when modified and repurposed, have the potential to treat, remedy or cure a vast array of conditions and diseases.

The new UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Institute includes six (6) stem cell Centers led by Center Directors and Deputy Directors and one (1) Brain Tumor and Neuro-Restoration Program.

1. Sanford Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research (ISSCOR) Center, for stem cell research that will be conducted in a laboratory bay located aboard the International Space Station currently in low-Earth orbit.

2. Sanford Stem Cell Fitness and Space Medicine Center, which conducts in-depth space fitness and orbital medicine that can benefit both astronauts and people living on Earth.

3. Sanford Stem Cell Innovation Center, which will support regenerative medicine company development, including contract research in low-Earth orbit.

4. Sanford Stem Cell Discovery Center, which conducts basic and translational stem cell research.

5. Sanford Advanced Therapy Center, which provides fundamental tools and services to move basic research findings to next stages, such as early phase trials.

6. Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center, which conducts research to accelerate relevant drug and therapy development in regenerative medicine, including clinical trials.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Clinical Research, the Clinical Trials Financial Analyst develops and manages research proposals, awards, contracts, consulting engagement agreements, consulting products and transactions related to clinical research and its supporting activities under the auspices of the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center's CIRM Alpha Clinic. This position provides analysis and recommendations regarding all financial aspects of research administration to the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center (SSCCC), e.g. review of contracts, budgets, agreements, amendments, invoicing, billing, recharging and coverage analyses. This position provides decision support on pre and post-award financial administration and management of clinical research funds. The Clinical Trials Financial Analyst also advises and assists faculty and staff on research administration compliance and financial audits of clinical research.

The SSCCC is devoted to accelerating the translation of all types of stem cell research to safe and effective therapies. The SSCCC CIRM Alpha Clinic at UC San Diego is one of nine Alpha Clinics in the State of California and is the regional leader in early phase, first-in-human clinical research, attracts patients, funding agencies and study sponsors to participate in, support, and accelerate novel stem cell clinical trials and ancillary research for a range of difficult diseases. The incumbent will also support pre-clinical and clinical financial activities that involve the STrategic Advisory Research Team (START), the pre-clinical advisory arm of the SSCCC. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

• Ability to manage a high volume of transactions. Ability to prioritize occasionally heavy workload and meet multiple deadlines.

• Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting. Ability to identify issues and problems, thoroughly research moderately complex financial issues and summarize large amounts of data into useful recommendations.

• Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.

• Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization; communication skills; and a customer service focus. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing, electronically, and by spoken word with a variety of people from faculty, staff, and industry representatives. Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills to communicate ideas and issues clearly, concisely, and accurately. Ability to interact effectively with a diversity of people at all levels within the University and externally to promote positive working relationships and to achieve the organization's goals and objectives. Proven ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment to solve problems when working with a variety of sensitive issues or highly confidential information.

• Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration. Demonstrated contract/legal background.

• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines. Knowledge of and experience working with federal and state regulations regarding clinical trials.

• Knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.

• Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles. Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including ability to understand cost accounting as applied to University functions. Ability to perform internal audtis of procedures to ensure compliance to OMB A-110, OMB A-133, and OMB A-21.

• Demonstrated experience creating clinical trial budgets and making financial decisions based on moderately complex study protocols.

• Demonstrated experience analyzing and drafting moderately complex clinical trial budgets and recommending negotiation for mutually satisfying terms and conditions.

• Demonstrated skill in using personal computers and a wide variety of software packages for word-processing, spreadsheets, database processing, presentations, web and publication design, and calendaring (e.g. Microsoft Office suite, Adobe suite, etc.). Knowledge of e-mail systems as a primary form of communication; accomplished skill at navigating the Internet for information retrieval.

• Knowledge of UC policy and procedures regarding acceptance of industry funds, including rights to data, restrictions on publication, indemnification, subject injury, disposition of intellectual property rights, patient confidentiality.

• Knowledge of UC San Diego systems, e.g. Oracle, Concur, Epic, iContracts.

• Familiarity with program announcements and grants made by California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM).

• Experience coordinating between Institutional departmental personnel, principal investigators, OCTA, OCGA, OIC, funding partner research associates, paralegals and attorneys at the funding partner, and other offices on campus including the Office of Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), the Conflict of Interest Office (COI), and Office of Coverage Analysis Administration (OCAA).
