Job Title: Wheeler Theater Technician - Lighting Specialist

Department: Wheeler Opera House

Classification: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $27.74/ hourly - $31.21/ hourly

Salary Range: $27.74/ hourly - $41.62/ hourly

Position Summary: This position is responsible for the technical aspects of productions and events hosted, presented, or produced by the Wheeler Opera House, with an emphasis on lighting-related operations. They operate in the lighting department, serving as master electrician, while working across all areas of the production department including stagecraft, audio, and video projection to facilitate the needs of events and guiding technical crews while ensuring a safe environment.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the direct supervision of the Wheeler Production Manager and as needed, under the functional supervision of the Assistant Production Manager. This position supervises lighting technicians and crew in ensuring the highest quality lighting experiences for events hosted, presented, and produced by the Wheeler Opera House.

Essential Job Functions:

Event & Production Support

* With an emphasis on the theater's lighting systems, collaborates with Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager to understand and fulfill technical needs for events and performances hosted, presented, or produced by the Wheeler Opera House:

o Attends meetings as necessary in preparation for upcoming events.

o Corresponds with event producers, visiting companies, and vendors. Completes administrative duties such as reviewing production riders, confirming timecards, and completing event reports.

o Assists with the set-up, execution, and tear-down for events.

o Under the direction of the Production Manager or Assistant Production Manager, provides technical support for visiting artists, clients, and lighting personnel. Demonstrates competency in safely and effectively operating theater audio, rigging, and projection equipment.

o Maintains and safeguards theater assets. Guides facility rental clients and visiting productions on safety protocol and supervises use of Wheeler equipment.

Technical Operations & Lighting Leadership

* Serves as a technical generalist for events, as needed.

* Serves as lead lighting technician and electrician for events:

o Configures and programs lighting deployments for various events, ensuring optimal lighting design and coverage for live and recorded events.

o Sets up lighting systems including moving instruments, LEDs, ground rows, and follow spots.

o Provides live lighting design and delivery for a variety of performances, adapting to the needs of artists, directors, designers, producers, and event organizers.

o Operates motorized rigging system for lifting and moving stage equipment.

o Hangs and focuses lighting instruments. Programs and operates lighting console to build attractive lighting looks. Operates follow spots.

o Operates video projection system.

Equipment Maintenance & Inventory

* Performs regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on lighting equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life. Maintains inventory and detailed records of equipment usage, maintenance, and repairs. Makes recommendations to Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager regarding purchases, upgrades, or replacements. Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Safety & Compliance

* Maintains safety of all personnel on stage by ensuring OSHA compliance of stage labor practices and any Union requirements of visiting productions. Ensures adherence to house policies and safety standards.

Professional Development & Staff Training

* Stays current on production industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in theatrical lighting. Identifies ways to continue education on best practices and expand skillsets.

* Trains and supervises part-time, student, and volunteer technical staff on proper use of lighting equipment and safety protocol.

* Assists with budgeting for lighting equipment, supplies, and staffing.

Budgeting & Leadership

* Acts as crew head, as assigned, in the absence of Production Manager or Assistant Production Manager.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Associates or Bachelors degree in Audio Engineering, Technical Theater, or related field is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of experience in technical theater or lighting design. Multiple years with experience in lighting design, programming, and video projection in a theater, performing arts center, or live music venue is preferred.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with industry-standard lighting equipment including digital lighting consoles (e.g. ETC, Grand MA, and Chamsys) with strong understanding of modern lighting technology including, but not limited to LED, intelligent fixtures, and lighting control systems. Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, and Outlook (Email). Must have a strong understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position requires a physical examination (to be completed at Grand River Health Clinic West - Parachute) and a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination and a Criminal Background Check.

Position Type and Work Hours:

* Full Time Employment, 40+ hours per work week. Schedule will vary with workload and event requirements.

* Evenings/Weekends will frequently be required depending on department needs and event calendar. Work on Holidays may occasionally be required.

Work Environment:

* Indoors: Performing arts center environment, including a regular need to work at heights, have exposure to noise and vibration, extended hours in darkness or limited lighting, in addition to a typical office environment

* Outdoors/Off-Site: Meetings, special events, and trainings. Position may require removal of snow and ice from walkways and truck loading areas. May need to operate a city vehicle to travel to offsite locations.
