Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Technician who will focus on the preparation and operation of the Uranium Science and Technology Center. This Center focuses on the front end of the fuel cycle prior to enrichment. This position resides in the Uranium Chemistry, Application, and Simulation Group in the Materials Modeling & Characterization Section, Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage support work for various uranium science unit operations. This includes communication with the relevant organizations, planning and execution of experimental work, and communication of results.
  • Contribute as a team member and assist research and technical staff with day-to-day laboratory operations and maintenance.
  • Handle laboratory operations by performing the roles of hazardous material management inventory system custodian (HMMIS), lab space manager (LSM), pressure system custodian (PSC), and other roles as needed to maintain compliance of the space and equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A.S. degree with seven (7) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with uranium in scientific settings, and familiarity with good radiological laboratory practices.
  • Experience working with fume hoods and gloveboxes
  • Experience with providing operational input to design projects
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in fuel cycle chemistry and operations
  • Experience participating on design teams including input, review, and application of design ideas
  • Understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers and the ability to use them as an operator as well as determining if they are not running properly

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
