Description

AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a paid summer internship within our SciLine department!

SciLine, a free service for journalists and scientists that aims to get more evidence into the news, seeks a Data Analysis Intern to evaluate and strengthen our news-coverage discovery efforts. The ability to find and evaluate news stories that result from journalists' interactions with SciLine is critical to understanding the organization's impact. This internship will focus on assessing the effectiveness of SciLine's news-story-tracking function, and on generating data-driven recommendations to improve upon it. Collaborating closely with SciLine's senior scientific outreach manager and operations manager, the intern will help advance SciLine's mission of enriching U.S. journalism through scientific evidence and expertise.

Help us ignite the next era of science.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze SciLine's existing story tracking data to identify trends, including factors that make it easier or harder to locate news stories.
  • Conduct retrospective analysis of story tracking during a defined time period to assess SciLine's success rate in identifying stories, which could include:

    • Assisting with outreach to a random sample of journalists who have used SciLine's services to collect stories that they published as a result of SciLine's help;
    • Comparing these journalist-submitted stories with internally tracked coverage to identify gaps associated with variables such as medium, geographic region, outlet type, presence of expert quotes, time to journalists' deadline, or type of SciLine service, etc.; and
    • Creating visualizations of SciLine's internal processes for story tracking to identify drop off points where data is lost or success rates dip.

  • Research and evaluate story tracking search tools and methodologies, synthesize findings, and develop recommendations to improve story discovery.
  • Assist with story tracking tasks and data entry as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (or transitioning between the two) at a university/college.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with data sets, spreadsheets, or databases. Experience with data visualization tools a plus.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to clearly summarize findings.
  • Interest and enthusiasm about journalism, media analysis, or the role of data and scientific evidence in news coverage.
