Job Summary
The Safety Specialist II for Occupational Health will provide risk assessment support and hazard control guidance to faculty, staff, and students regarding occupational health and safety programs. The role focuses on minimizing risks associated with workplace and campus-wide hazards, promoting a strong safety culture, and maintaining compliance with University policies and federal, state, and local regulations. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Occupational Health & Safety.
The role requires technical expertise in recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards, as well as applying management-of-change principles to anticipate risks associated with evolving work processes. The Safety Specialist II will serve as a technical expert in occupational health and collaborate with other University safety programs.
Responsibilities include implementing and updating industrial hygiene and occupational health programs, conducting baseline surveys and exposure assessments, and evaluating facility operations, construction activities, and environmental air quality concerns. The position also supports safety awareness training and development of outreach materials for hazardous materials and safe work practices. Strong communication skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships across the University are essential.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field. Three (3) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.

Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position: ability to raise, lower, and transport objects weighing up to 50 pounds using the hand, arm, or shoulder and the ability to walk by moving about on foot for extended periods.
Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma methodology for collaborative process improvement.
  • Bilingual: Highly desirable for the candidate to speak and write English and Spanish fluently, with applied experience developing and delivering professional safety information/training in both languages.
  • Experience promoting and implementing safety within a university program.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerBI, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Office 365, TEAMS, and Outlook.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of environmental health and occupational safety principles.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex written regulations and technical reports.
  • Experience with OSHA requirements and best management practices for training employees and students on safe work practices involving hazardous materials or equipment.
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs.
  • Expertise in worker exposure assessment, vehicle safety, electrical safety, hazard communication, PPE, fall prevention, and fire prevention.
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills to effectively negotiate and influence personnel and students toward best safety practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills for interacting with senior managers across academic and administrative departments.
  • Strong time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide focused support to UT Dallas health and safety programs across research and academic units, Facilities Management, and Student Affairs.
  • Receive and evaluate reports of potential occupational hazards; assess conditions and implement solutions to minimize or mitigate risks.
  • Ensure continuity and alignment of safety programming across campus in coordination with the University Safety Team.
  • Participate in postincident assessments and evaluations.


Hazard Assessment & Risk Control

  • Conduct Job Hazard Assessments and PPE Hazard Assessments; collaborate with supervisors to develop corrective measures for identified safety and health risks.
  • Utilize standard and advanced techniques, equipment, and instrumentation to support exposure monitoring, particularly for chemical and noise hazards.
  • Collaborate with departments to identify and implement feasible engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE solutions.
  • Implement elements of the respiratory protection program, including training, fit testing, and evaluation of respirator selection and use.

Ergonomics & Specialized Evaluations

  • Develop and apply effective ergonomic training and communication strategies for faculty and staff.
  • Conduct ergonomic evaluations in administrative and other work settings.
  • Benchmark ergonomic program practices with peer institutions.

Training & Program Support

  • Maintain and support a progressive safety training program for faculty, staff, and students working with hazardous materials or in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Assist in preparing training programs and outreach materials to promote safe work practices and environmental conscientiousness.

Occupational Health Coordination
  • Liaise with the University's Occupational Health provider and Workers' Compensation Program in coordination with the Assistant Directors of Occupational Health & Safety and Risk Management.
Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety performance evaluations and baseline surveys to determine exposure levels to hazardous chemicals and other conditions.
  • Support evaluation of facility construction, operations, and maintenance programs, including environmental air quality investigations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to assist with workplace emergency preparation/drills and response actions.
  • Must be able to be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.
  • Required - Extensive walking, sustained standing, occasional climbing (ladders/stairs), occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
