Description

This is a paid internship, range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2026 Internship Dates:



  • Semester students: May 18th to July 24th

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit's Safety Division oversees transit construction and transit employee safety throughout the Puget Sound region - Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The Safety intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that oversees our construction and employee safety services and learn how a large regional transit system is managed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:



  • Organizing and coordinating a variety of projects initiated in Sound Transit's Safety Division.
  • Maintaining records and databases for a variety of projects.
  • Attending safety meetings and workshops for project assignments.
  • Preparing materials and attending meetings to support transit initiatives.
  • Participates in weekly site safety walks at Sound Transit construction projects.
  • Advises industrial hygiene programs for all Agency employees by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and recommending controls for environmental and physical hazards for the health and well-being of our workers and passengers.
  • Collaborates with Health and Safety Specialists to ensure that Sound Transit's health and safety program is effective in practice.


POTENTIAL PROJECTS:



  • Review, edit and write Safety plans and programs.
  • Confined Space Inventory.
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS) System audit and inventory.
  • Monitoring and Sampling opportunities.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in Environmental or Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial Hygiene or relevant two-year certificate.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:



  • Independent self-starter and ability to work well in a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work graciously and effectively with the public.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment on a multitude of projects.
  • Interest with project planning concepts and transportation policies and practices.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft office products - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Familiar with Washington State Labor and Industry processes.
  • Understanding of Principles of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Knowledge of General Construction and Occupational Safety Standards.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:



  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery when visiting job sites during construction and when working in the field.
