The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is seeking a Field Operations Inspector. The Field Operations Inspector to support the daily oversight and coordination of public transportation services in the field. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant bus and mobility operations by monitoring service delivery, schedule adherence, and operator performance. The Field Operations Inspector works closely with transit control centers and operational leadership to address service disruptions, resolve operational issues, and maintain continuity of service across multiple modes. Designated as an essential position, this role is critical to sustaining public transportation operations during emergencies, severe weather events, and other critical situations.

The Field Operations Inspector impacts the MTA's organizational success by:

  • Planning, directing, coordinating, and overseeing field operations related to scheduled and supplemental transit services, including bus and mobility services, equipment, and transit facilities.
  • Providing day-to-day monitoring, guidance, and operational oversight across bus and mobility services to ensure schedule adherence, service reliability, and compliance with MTA rules and procedures.
  • Monitoring, investigating, and developing corrective actions to address operational and administrative issues affecting field performance and service delivery.
  • Evaluating operator performance and providing comprehensive observations and feedback to Bus Transportation Division management to support accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Ensuring effective delivery of transit services in the field with a focus on safety, operational compliance, and customer service standards.
  • Providing back-up operational support and monitoring for Light Rail and Metro services and coordinating closely with all Control Centers to maintain service continuity.
  • Supporting coordinated field operations during service disruptions, special events, adverse weather, and emergency situations to ensure system-wide operational stability.
  • Serving as an essential employee responsible for maintaining critical public transportation operations and selected support functions during emergency conditions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in commercial driving, passenger services, transportation, or comparable field operations requiring strict adherence to safety, customer service, and regulatory standards.

Substitution Information:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Transportation, Business Administration, Management or a related field may be substituted for the experience at a rate of thirty credit hours for each year of the required experience, for up to two years of the experience.
  2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

Special Requirements:
  1. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
  2. Employees are required to work shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
  3. Employees are required to travel to various locations throughout the MTA service area.
  4. Employees in this role may be exposed to emergency situations involving graphic injuries.
  5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49- Federal Department of Transportation Drug Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules.

Licenses & Certifications

Employees in this classification must operate a motor vehicle and are required to possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator's license. A Maryland State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement, along with applicable continuing education and certifications, is required.
