Overview

Background Information:

The Business Communications Specialist position is a full-time, onsite position at the Atlantic Test Range (ATR) in Patuxent River, MD. As part of the Business Communications Team, the specialist works closely with management, employees, and outside organizations to coordinate internal and external communications in support of the government customer. Work includes producing news articles, photos and news releases, maintaining internal blogs/newsletters, managing the public web site and internal SharePoint site, and creating and maintaining communications products and informational materials for employees and customers. The position is also responsible for conducting photography on the premises, managing the photo library, producing framed photos, display posters and graphics, and performing the many production tasks asked of the Business Communications Team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

    Reports to and gets tasking advice from the Business Communications Senior Editor
  • Works with experts inside and outside of the organization to develop communications and promotional materials (within DAiTA, other departments, Public Affairs, Visual Information, other Navy entities and representatives from other services)
  • Prepares, edits, and disseminates written materials, graphics, photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and/or charts to illustrate concepts used in communications and promotional materials to employees, stakeholders and customers
  • Interviews subject-matter experts to create communications products, blog entries, social media posts, and news articles highlighting employee achievements and technologies developed and employed at ART
  • Interviews engineers and technicians and observes procedures to develop, update, and maintain fact sheets and technical documents
  • Researches, develops, reviews, prints and binds reports, presentations, white papers, templates, instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex technical information
  • Uses photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation, and charts to increase users' understanding of the material
  • Assists in laying out material for publication, and arranging for typing, duplication, and distribution of material
  • Selects appropriate medium for message or audience-for internal and external communications
  • Standardizes content across platforms and media, and gathers user feedback to update and improve content
  • Produces, prints, mats and frames high-quality photos
  • Develops and maintains repositories for photographs, videos, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate materials
  • Develops and updates internal (SharePoint) and external (public) web sites
  • Creates and posts blog entries, templates, and other business communications tools and archives photos and documents using the on-line, internal SharePoint communications tool
  • Ensures accuracy and, when applicable, security approval and public release of documents and photographs
  • Organizes material and completes writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology

Required Education, Experience, Skills, & Certifications/Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Graphic Arts, Multimedia Communications, or related curriculum from an accredited college or university preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience (3 years preferred) performing the stated or similar functions
  • A minimum of 1 year of the stated total experience working in a graphic arts field
  • Demonstrated proficiency skill with commercial computer multimedia applications such as Adobe
  • Demonstrated advanced skill in using office automation equipment including personal computers, printers, optical scanners
  • Demonstrated advanced skill level using SharePoint applications
  • Demonstrated skill using commercial photography equipment
  • Photography and/or writing experience highly desired *
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Creative Suite (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom) and graphics experience highly desired *
  • Applicant should be outgoing and a self-starter
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and successfully pass drug screenings

Clearance Requirements:

  • Currently hold or be able to obtain and maintain the proper US DoD issued security clearance, which requires US Citizenship. Security clearance eligibility may be discussed during the interview phase.
  • Employment and start date is contingent upon the candidate receiving the required US DoD issued interim security clearance

Work Conditions:

  • Most work performed in enclosed buildings at a desk or in data processing environments. Work will include sitting, standing, walking, lifting and reaching. Special vision abilities to perform this job are close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus. Some travel and/or overtime may be required.
