LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION, RIVERBEND MAXIMUM SECURITY INSTITUTION, DAVIDSON COUNTY

This position requires a criminal background check. Therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history in order to be considered for this position.

A Motor Vehicle Records screening will be conducted prior to employment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, and completion of requirements for teaching certification.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Interim or professional Tennessee Teacher's License is required.

Overview

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructors will deliver individualized instruction in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies to incarcerated individuals pursuing high school equivalency, employment, or postsecondary opportunities. This position collaborates with a dedicated team to provide academic and workforce-readiness programming. This role requires strong communication, instructional, and advisory skills to support adult learners in achieving their goals.

Responsibilities

  1. Plan and Deliver Instruction: Develops and implements engaging lesson plans using differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs in both group and individual settings that aligns with standards.
  2. Assess Student Progress: Prepares, administers, and analyzes formative and summative assessments to determine instructional levels, appropriate class placement, and diploma attainment in compliance with state and institutional policies and guidelines.
  3. Maintain Records and Compliance: Accurately maintains student academic records, progress reports, and required TDOC documentation, including Offender Management System data entry, while ensuring confidentiality and adherence to correctional policies.
  4. Support Student Success: Provides individualized academic and motivational support to help students overcome barriers, achieve educational goals, and prepare for employment or post-secondary transitions.
  5. Collaborate with Staff and Stakeholders: Coordinates with education team, special education personnel, and facility staff to support a safe, structured, and productive learning environment.
  6. Uphold Security and Supervision Standards: Performs instructional and supervisory duties in accordance with TDOC policies, maintaining awareness of security protocols and ensuring the safety of staff and students.
  7. Engage in Professional Development: Participates in ongoing training and professional learning to remain current with best practices in adult education and maintain compliance with TDOE licensing standards.
