Title: Communications & Events Coordinator Executive Area: Academic Affairs College/School/MBU: Social & Behavioral Sciences Department: Dean - Social & Behavioral Sciences Work Location: Amherst Schedule: Full Time Work Arrangement: Hybrid Job Summary The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences' (SBS) Communications and Events Coordinator/Communications and Events Manager is responsible for creating and executing new and interesting content that helps promote and build a following for SBS strategic goals. This position oversees communications efforts and develops and implements events for their assigned departments, while also supporting College-level initiatives as needed. Essential Functions Develops and manages content, updates pages ondepartment and College websites, and tracks and analyzes website traffic and engagement data and seek ways to enhance user experience.
Writesnews stories, profiles, and features showcasing student and faculty achievements, research spotlights, and organizational announcements.Researchesandselectsstory concepts and communicate with the parties involvedto arrangefor interviews.Promotes stories to the UMass News Office andtoInside UMass.
Writes, designs, edits, produces, and distributeselectronic newsletters and other informational communication.
Creates promotional materials for student recruitment, program development, alumni development, and other purposes that advance department and College-level strategic goals.
Develops and implements department-level events and activities that align with the strategic goals of the department for recruitment and retention of students and for alumni development. Directs or assists with a wide variety of on-site and occasional off-site events, including events for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other external constituents. Supports College-level events in partnership with the broader SBS Communications and Events Team.
Collaborates with the department scholarship committee to determine scholarship award deadlines, promote opportunities, communicate award recipient information, and steward department scholarship opportunities.
Works with Undergraduate Program Directors, Graduate Program Directors, and Directors of Undergraduate Advising to track post-graduate student employment and develop a list of internship and alumni mentoring opportunities. Develops communication initiatives to increase student response rates to existing tracking mechanisms for evaluating student success and satisfaction.
Manages the schedule and reservations of department-level event spaces. Maintains a public calendar of department events, and other public events that benefit faculty, staff, and students
Manages special projects as needed.
Communications and Events Manager has the following additional essential functions: Supervises 1-2 undergraduate student assistants as needed. Other Functions Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet department, executive area/division, and university goals and objectives. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Excellent writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly develop and sustain productive relationships with a variety of internal and external constituents.
High-level attention to detail with the ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
Ability to contribute toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
Capacity, skill, and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
Understanding of best practices in existing technologies andthe potential of new technologies to advance the goals of the position.
Knowledge of current media technology, including desktop publishing, web maintenance, social media, and/or video/photography, and a willingness to learn new media technologies as they emerge.

Communications and Events Manager has the following additional essential functions: Two years of professional experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Drupal, basic HTML and CSS coding, Adobe Photoshop, video production, and video editing.
Experience in communications and web management. Working Conditions Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion. Work Schedule and Work Arrangement Monday through Friday, 7.5 hrs/day.
43-week appointment.
Occasional night or weekend hours may be required as business needs dictate. This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee's work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
