Willdan currently has an opening for a full-time Planning Technician in the Los Angeles County area. Under general supervision, the Planning Technician performs responsible, professional planning activities involving current planning and special projects. Planning Technician is a full professional, entry-level position. The Planning Technician will conduct research and analysis on moderate planning projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review planning and development projects for completeness and compliance, conducting research, and collecting, maintaining, and analyzing data.
  • Updating and managing databases, records, and filing systems, as well as monitoring logs, maps, drawings, and related materials to ensure accuracy.
  • Assists the public at the counter and over the phone by responding to inquiries regarding zoning, land use regulations, the General Plan, application intake and processing, and other planning and development-related information.
  • Additional duties include supporting interdepartmental and agency requests, providing basic property information, interpreting zoning ordinances, preparing basic staff reports, plan checking, reviewing site, building, and grading plans for compliance, and conducting field surveys.
  • The role also supports planning staff on special projects and prepares basic reports and planning documents, while performing other related duties as assigned under the direction of the Planning Manager or senior staff.
  • Coordinating with various working groups, taskforces, and other County and State departments.
  • Use of computer programs or planning applications in carrying out work related to proposed development projects, such as accepting applications, processing fees, and reviewing applications.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning or a related field; one (4) year of experience performing responsible, professional planning activities involving current, preferably in the public sector.
  • Perform responsible current planning assignments.
  • Understand and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards applicable to the planning process.
  • Interpret and understand engineering and architectural plans, concepts, and methodologies.
  • Interpret maps, site and building plans and specifications, graphs, and statistical data.
  • Research, analyze and summarize planning data, both manually and with computer programs.
  • Prepare clear visual displays, such as maps, graphs, and illustrations.
  • Prepare clear and concise correspondence, reports, and other written materials.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and court decisions applicable to assigned areas of responsibility, including the Subdivision Map Act and the California Environmental Quality Act.
  • Knowledge of objectives, principles, procedures, standards, practices, and information sources of city planning.
  • Knowledge of zoning implementation and other municipal ordinances.
  • Knowledge of application of land use, physical design, economic, environmental, and/or social concepts to the planning process.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques and formulae relevant to the planning process.
  • Knowledge of terminology, symbols, methods, techniques, and instruments used in planning.
  • Knowledge of local government organization and the functions and practices of a municipal planning function.
