Job Summary:

Performs the full development lifecycle (requirements gathering/analysis, design, development, testing/integration, documentation, and ongoing maintenance) for IBM i (AS/400) systems supporting our precision manufacturing operations. Primary focus is RPG and CL programming, ERP customization, and process improvements in a manufacturing environment. Responsibilities may also include project leadership, user training, business analysis, and production support. This is an on-site role based in Chatsworth, CA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Interview and analyze business needs to provide recommendations for automation and efficiency improvements
  • Perform complex workflow analysis and recommend quality improvements
    Develop system specifications for complex applications, systems and database designs
  • Code to system specifications; develop test plans, and install and test computer applications based on specifications
  • Deploy applications and systems to production, providing ongoing application support as needed
  • Assist in creating quality assurance procedures and policies
  • Document applications, technical specifications and user's manual
  • Monitor systems for performance and identify inefficiencies, then implement improvements
  • Analyze and troubleshoot application problems
  • Communicate and interact with staff to function as a liaison to increase efficiency and functionality of software applications
  • Continuously develop technology expertise
  • Assist Information Systems Management with special projects as directed
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain RPG and CL programs on the IBM i platform to support manufacturing operations, inventory, production control, and related business processes.
  • Analyze existing manufacturing workflows and recommend system improvements or automation opportunities within the ERP and custom applications.


Job Skills & Abilities:



  • Proven experience designing, developing, and maintaining applications on IBM Power Systems / IBM i (AS/400) using RPG (RPG IV, RPG Free/ILE preferred) and CL.
  • Hands-on experience supporting or customizing manufacturing ERP systems (MAPICS / Infor XA strongly preferred; other manufacturing ERPs such as BPCS, PRMS, EPICOR, or System 21 also valuable).
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing business processes (production/work-order control, inventory, shop-floor, supply chain, order-to-cash, etc.).
  • Ability to perform complex workflow analysis and recommend automation/efficiency improvements in a manufacturing setting.
  • Experience with embedded SQL, DB2 on IBM i, and performance tuning of RPG applications.
  • Ability to design and implement multi-tier software applications/systems
  • Demonstrated ability in building end-to-end applications
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize business needs, analyze requests, recommend solid technical solutions, and lead in delivering the solution
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and relentless attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with a diverse group of clients, team members, managers, and subject matter experts (SME)
  • Ability to plan and lead a project, including effective leadership of a project team
  • Ability to provide periodic formal project updates and report out to management
  • Ability to participate in rotating on-call support schedule during business and/or non-business hours


Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, or a directly related field of study in the area the Sr. P/A will be supporting (see Software Development Skills below for list of programming languages, software, databases, systems, and skills)
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in IBM i / AS400 application development using RPG and CL.



  • Manufacturing or supply-chain industry experience strongly preferred (precision manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, industrial, or similar environments highly desirable).



  • Demonstrated experience supporting or enhancing manufacturing ERP systems and related shop-floor production processes.


  • Ability to manage rapidly changing priorities and deadlines
  • Past position working with projects from conception to completion with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail



Software Development Skills:



  • ERP Programming Experience
  • IBM Power Systems / IBM i / AS400
  • Working knowledge of RPG Programming and CL.
  • Knowledge of MAPICS or INFOR a plus.
  • Knowledge of SEQUEL Server, SQL, embedded SQL


Required Technical Skills:



  • IBM Power Systems / IBM i (AS/400) - extensive hands-on experience
  • RPG Programming (RPG IV and/or RPG Free/ILE) and CL
  • Embedded SQL and DB2 on IBM i
  • ERP programming and customization in a manufacturing environment
  • MAPICS or Infor XA experience strongly preferred (other manufacturing ERPs such as BPCS, PRMS, EPICOR, System 21, or JDE also considered)


Preferred / Nice-to-Have:



  • Knowledge of modern IBM i tools (RDi, Change Management tools such as Aldon/Turnover, Profound UI or similar modernization tools)
  • SQL Server experience
  • EDI experience in a manufacturing/supply-chain context


Physical Requirements:



  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Able to travel as needed (occasional).
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at organizations' facilities.
