Here, your curiosity fuels progress, your voice shapes innovation, and your ambition helps redefine what's possible within science and learning. We are a culture that obsesses over impact, challenges, and drives what's next to power infinite possibilities for our customers, colleagues and society at large. About the Role: We are looking for a Principal Scientist to be the senior scientific voice across Wiley's Clinical Outcome Assessment (COA) work, part of our AI and Data Analytics organisation. The role exists to make sure that the science underpinning every instrument we work with is sound, current, and well-represented, and that decisions across our business reflect the views of clinical authors and instrument developers. The role works closely with the medical societies and academic authors who originated these instruments, supports their continued scientific development, and represents Wiley credibly in the clinical outcomes community. It is an opportunity to do real scientific work alongside commercial, product, partnership, and publishing colleagues, and reports to the Senior Director, Clinical Outcome Assessments. Job Responsibilities
- Provide expert scientific assessment of instruments across the portfolio, evaluating psychometric properties, validation evidence, and regulatory precedent in line with current measurement science.
- Work closely with the medical societies, instrument authors, and academic groups behind the instruments in our portfolio, supporting their scientific work and acting as a senior point of contact for scientific questions.
- Support the continued scientific development of instruments alongside their authors and Scientific Affairs colleagues, including evidence updates, validation work, and considered translation and adaptation programmes.
- Provide scientific guidance to colleagues across the business so that customer conversations, product builds, and partnership decisions all reflect sound clinical measurement principles.
- Represent Wiley as an active and credible participant in the clinical outcomes community, including at ISOQOL, ISPOR, CPATH, and other professional forums.
- Provide scientific input to clinical platform product development, ensuring the platforms are built on sound clinical foundations and respect the integrity of the underlying instruments.
Required Qualifications
- Postgraduate degree (MSc, PhD, or equivalent) in clinical outcomes research, psychometrics, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), epidemiology, clinical psychology, or a closely related discipline. Strong academic background combined with substantial practical experience in clinical measurement science is also acceptable.
- 5+ years working with Clinical Outcome Assessments in a scientific, regulatory, or commercial context, including roles in pharmaceutical clinical development, CRO scientific affairs, health outcomes consultancy, academic research in psychometrics or patient-reported outcomes, or regulatory science.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate the psychometric properties and clinical utility of measurement instruments.
- Familiarity with the regulatory landscape for COAs, including FDA Patient-Focused Drug Development guidance, EMA qualification, and ICH standards.
- Strong literature review and evidence synthesis skills.
- Familiarity with psychometric validation methodologies (classical test theory, item response theory, Rasch analysis).
- Ability to communicate complex scientific and psychometric concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, with credibility among clinical and academic peers.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in psychometrics, HEOR, or clinical outcomes research.
- Published research in COA-related fields.
- Experience working across multiple therapeutic areas.
- Track record of contributing to instrument development, validation, or regulatory submission, ideally in collaboration with academic or society partners.
- Experience with systematic evidence review or meta-analysis.
- Familiarity with CDISC standards for COA data.
- Active engagement with ISOQOL, ISPOR, CPATH, or equivalent professional communities.
- Familiarity with electronic COA implementation and the impact of mode of administration on measurement properties.
- Knowledge of AI-assisted evidence synthesis approaches.
