Description

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Training and Certification is responsible for the training of locomotive engineers, conductors and assistant conductors and other functions within the Transportation Division. The department conducts and oversees training programs that enable employees to meet regulatory mandates and develop necessary job skills.

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Locomotive Engineers, the Operations Trainer-ASLE will train and supervise locomotive engineer candidates to ensure their compliance with Metra schedules and standards as established by the Training and Certification Department, as well as Safety Rules and 49 CFR 240 and 242 regulations governing the certification of locomotive engineers. The primary duties include: Monitor, critique, and evaluate candidate's performance through the use of the Locomotive Simulator in a control setting. Monitor the continuing Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) mandated education of currently certified locomotive engineers by providing classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Conduct safety meetings to reinforce Metra and FRA safety rules. Assist in monitoring the performance of training engineers responsible for candidate engineers. Participate in corporate testing functions and initiatives. Coordinate team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor performance, and provide guidance and training, but is not a supervisor. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  1. Must have High School Diploma or GED.
  2. In addition to #1, must have a minimum of four years of locomotive engineering experience.
  3. Good knowledge of FRA 49 CFR 240 and 242 regulations regarding engineer dual certification.
  4. Working knowledge of General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) and Metra's safety rules.
  5. General knowledge of adult learning.
  6. Good verbal and written communications.
  7. Good organizational skills.
  8. Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  9. Ability to listen and analyze information.
  10. Ability to produce instructional materials.
  11. Ability to evaluate training effectiveness.
  12. Must have current Locomotive Engineer certification and free of decertification for a minimum period of four years.
  13. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  14. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  15. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  16. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions
  17. under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  18. Ability to stand, walk, and/or, for extended periods of time.

Preferred:

  1. Supervisory experience
  2. Some college classes in adult education
  3. Experience developing and facilitating training
