Job Summary

GateWay Community College is hiring for the exciting opportunity in the role of residential Counseling faculty! This position supports student success through comprehensive counseling services and instruction. This role provides personal, academic, career, and crisis counseling, while teaching Counseling and Personal Development courses each semester.

The faculty member contributes to campus and district committees, leads outreach initiatives, and delivers workshops, classroom presentations, and supports student success programs. Additional responsibilities include administering and interpreting career assessments, supporting the development and evaluation of counseling interventions, and engaging in ongoing professional and faculty development activities.

Essential Functions

  • Teach FYE, CAP, and CPD courses; prepare syllabi, lesson plans, and instructional materials aligned with course competencies; provide instructional support and hold regular office hours
  • Deliver comprehensive counseling services through scheduled appointments and walk-in availability, addressing personal, academic, and career concerns. Provide crisis intervention and support, including leadership in emergency situations ranging from individual student crises to broader campus incidents; consult with faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student concerns, referrals, and appropriate interventions; communicate through in-person, phone, virtually and email interactions while maintaining accurate and timely documentation
  • Develop and present workshops on counseling, academic success, and personal development topics; Build and maintain partnerships with community agencies and external resources to support student needs
  • Participate in campus and district committees, special projects, program initiatives, curriculum development and faculty/staff development.
  • Collaborate with counseling colleagues and campus teams to support a cohesive, student-centered approach
  • Provide leadership in assigned programs and contribute to the administration and continuous improvement of Counseling Services, including oversight of designated functions and processes
  • Engage in faculty development activities, including orientation, evaluations, and ongoing professional growth in teaching, counseling, and consultation
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

1) A Master's degree or higher with an emphasis in counseling, from a regionally accredited college or university and have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester/ thirty-six (36) quarter hours or equivalent of graduate work including the following:

1. Counseling Theories and Techniques
2. Personality Theories or Human Development
3. Testing Theories and Applications
4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques
5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources
6. Individual Assessment
7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.

2) Must have completed either a Practicum, Supervised Practice, or an Internship in counseling (Applicants for counseling positions are strongly encouraged to include course descriptions from the university's catalog for the aforementioned seven courses). A counselor may be hired if he/she has completed coursework in at least five (5) of the first six (6) above areas and has the required twenty-four (24) semester or (36) quarter hours of graduate work. If the counselor is deficient in an area 1 through 6, the deficiency shall be removed within one year of the date of hire. Area seven (7) must be completed before the date of hire.

3) Must complete Springboard to Success training (Teaching and Learning in the Community College) during the first semester post-hire.

Desired Qualifications

A. Experience teaching in a community college, university, or K-12 setting.

B. Experience as a counselor within a community college.

C. Experience intervening with mental health crises to assess issues and facilitate community referrals

D. Experience with retention programs and services, preferably in a community college setting

E. Experience working with first generation students, diverse populations, or student success initiatives,
programs, and/or services.

F.1 year full-time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two years (internal candidates ONLY)

Special Working Conditions

  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all GateWay locations
  • Will require some evenings; may require some weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa
