THE POSITION:



THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanic IV to take a hands-on mentorship role within our Operations and Maintenance team. In this advanced position, you'll serve as a working lead, guiding, training, and collaborating with a team of Mechanics to ensure the reliable performance of the Agency's sophisticated mechanical systems used across our water, wastewater, recycled water, and composting operations.

As a Mechanic IV, you'll take on a blend of technical and leadership responsibilities: coordinating maintenance projects, troubleshooting complex mechanical issues, and overseeing preventive and predictive maintenance activities. You'll play a key part in maintaining pumps, compressors, gearboxes, pipelines, and other vital systems that keep our facilities operating safely and efficiently. Your expertise will help extend equipment life, reduce downtime, and support IEUA's commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in the design, installation, maintenance and repair of complex water facilities and systems.
Experience in a public agency is preferred.
Completion of college-level course work is highly desirable.

LICENSES; CERTIFICATES; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency's vehicle insurance program.

Within 6 months of appointment and during the course of employment obtain and maintain the following:

CPR and First Aid Certification

Confined Space Certification

Approved and qualified use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

Forklift Certification

In some assignments, the incumbent must possess and maintain:

California Class A or B driver's license

Boom Truck Fixed Cab Operator Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators

Weighmaster Certification

Within 24 months of hire or promotion obtain:

California Water Environment Association Mechanical Technologist Grade 4 Certification.

Within 24 months of hire or promotion obtain one of the following:

Certified Maintenance Reliability Technician Certification, or an approved alternative

Certified Maintenance Reliability Professional Certification, or an approved alternative

Certified Reliability Leader Certification, or an approved alternative

Within 24 months of hire or promotion obtain one of the following:

Vibration Analyst II Certification, or approved alternative

Machinery Lubrication Technician I Certification, or approved alternative

Within 24 months of hire or promotion obtain one of the following:

Infrared Thermography I Certification, or an approved alternative

Ultrasound Level I Certification, or approved alternative


Skills and Abilities
  • Provides technical leadership and guidance to Mechanics and maintenance personnel, fostering teamwork, accountability, and adherence to safety and performance standards.

  • Conducts advanced condition monitoring and reliability analyses using tools such as vibration analyzers, ultrasonic detectors, and infrared thermography to identify emerging mechanical issues before failure.

  • Performs complex mechanical repairs, upgrades, and alignments on pumps, gearboxes, piping systems, and rotating equipment to restore optimal functionality and extend asset life.

  • Collaborates with supervisors, engineers, and contractors on maintenance projects, equipment installations, and system improvements to ensure quality workmanship and compliance with specifications.

  • Utilizes data-driven insights from preventive and predictive maintenance programs to support asset management decisions and recommend maintenance strategy enhancements.

The Inland Empire Utilities Agency is a regional wastewater treatment agency and wholesale distributor of imported water to approximately 950,000 people across 242-square miles in western San Bernardino County. SELECTION PROCESS:

This recruitment is being conducted to fill two (2) vacancies and will establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur during the active status of the eligibility list.
Salary Range: GU 181
FLSA: Exempt
Probationary Period: 12 Months
