Job Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, analysis, and testing of missile systems and related mechanical components to support advanced aerospace and defense programs. This role performs engineering activities throughout the product development lifecycle, including conceptual design, detailed design, structural analysis, manufacturing support, and system testing. The Engineer Aeronautical 3 collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions that meet technical, manufacturing, and contractual requirements.

Job Responsibilities



  • Design major components and assemblies of missile systems to support product development and manufacturing objectives.
  • Develop preliminary layouts, sketches, design concepts, and engineering documentation to support design proposals.
  • Investigate and evaluate design considerations, including structural performance, thermal requirements, manufacturability, material availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-to-weight efficiency, and cost.
  • Coordinate design activities and technical requirements with cross-functional engineering and program teams.
  • Create layouts and detailed designs for complex assemblies, mechanisms, structures, and component parts.
  • Review completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, accuracy, and compliance with engineering standards, procedures, and specifications.
  • Design, develop, and test missile systems and related components while applying principles of aerodynamics and mechanical engineering.
  • Establish structural specifications and perform engineering analyses to support product performance and reliability.
  • Conduct performance testing and evaluate test results to support product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Generate engineering drawings and procurement documentation in accordance with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards.
  • Perform first-order structural analyses and engineering calculations to support design decisions.
  • Support manufacturing operations and resolve technical issues associated with product development and production.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams to achieve program objectives and deliver engineering solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements



  • Proficiency with advanced 3D CAD software, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Demonstrated experience generating engineering drawings and procurement documentation using Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
  • Ability to perform first-order structural analyses and engineering calculations to support product design.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with mechanical systems in professional, academic, or personal settings.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve common objectives.
  • Working knowledge of material science principles related to aerospace metallic materials.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Advanced training or certification in GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5 preferred.
  • Experience programming or operating CNC mills and lathes for aerospace hardware preferred.
  • Working knowledge of material science principles related to aerospace composite and non-metallic materials preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Active Department of Defense Secret clearance or higher preferred.


Education



  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
