Duke Cancer Institute Outpatient Oncology Program

The Duke Cancer Institute Outpatient Oncology Program is designed to help new graduate nurses launch their careers in an ambulatory oncology infusion setting. Participants gain hands-on experience across Duke Cancer Institute's outpatient locations in Durham, Raleigh, and Wake County while building specialized knowledge in oncology and infusion nursing.

Who: New graduate nurses

Location: During the program, participants rotate through Duke Cancer Institute outpatient facilities, gaining exposure to multiple teams, workflows, and patient populations before permanent placement.

Schedule: This program primarily offers a daytime schedule, generally working four 10-hour shifts per week, with limited weekend requirements depending on their assigned outpatient location. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are placed into infusion nursing roles at one of Duke Cancer Institute's outpatient locations in Durham, Raleigh, or Wake County.

This program is intended for new graduate nurses who are interested in beginning their nursing career in outpatient oncology infusion.

The program begins with one week of general orientation, followed by dedicated classroom learning and hands-on skills training. Participants then transition into patient care areas while continuing to receive oncology- and infusion-specific education throughout the program.

Yes. During the program, participants rotate through Duke Cancer Institute outpatient facilities, gaining exposure to multiple teams, workflows, and patient populations before permanent placement.

Throughout the rotational experience, nurse residents and clinical leaders work together to identify the best fit based on interests, strengths, and available openings. Once matched to a location, nurses complete an additional unit-specific orientation.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants are placed into infusion nursing roles at one of Duke Cancer Institute's outpatient locations in Durham, Raleigh, or Wake County.

• Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures.
• Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
• Plan, provide and document professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders andestablished policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
• Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
• Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.
• Participate in maintaining the environment of care including equipment and material resources.
• Prioritize work organization and identify resources available to assist in completing components of care in a timely manner.
• Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
• Support the development of other staff and formal learners. Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program. Exception: Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.

No experience required. All CNIs will be enrolled in and must complete the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire. CNIs are required to meet criteria set forth by the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 18 months of hire to be promoted to CNII.

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.
