Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Pharmacist and/or Veterinarian on duty, responsibilities will include customer service to clients, staff, and external pharmacies, while also distributing inpatient and outpatient veterinary drugs (preparation, labeling, and dispensing). Non-sterile, sterile and hazardous drug compounding and inventory control will be required. The technician will perform drug order/prescription entry, preparation of prescription orders, controlled substance distribution, and automated dispensing cabinet stocking as needed. Review of drug distribution and controlled drug reports is required, as well as record keeping to comply with state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician License.
  • Experience as a veterinary pharmacy technician in both an inpatient and outpatient environment.
  • Ability to interpret written veterinary prescriptions, and be able to calculate drug dosages.
  • Multitasking skills while on the phone, able to type, fill prescriptions and answer multiple questions.
  • Communication skills and ability to work well with others in a professional team atmosphere.
  • Knowledge of medications used in animals and ability to handle and prepare sterile, hazardous and/or cytotoxic drugs.
  • Interpersonal, oral communication and problem-solving skills in difficult settings where clients are emotionally upset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in customer service.
  • Experience working in a clean room environment.
  • Highly motivated and results oriented in daily interactions with co-workers and clients.
  • Ability to prioritize workload requirements.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and ability to handle and prepare cytotoxic drugs.

Department Overview

The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is expanding its veterinary specialty hospital in Southern California. The VMC-SC is a San Diego satellite specialty referral and 24-hour emergency hospital. This will expand the SVM's role in Southern California while providing clients and referring veterinarians with the highest level of customer care. Net income from this practice (which will be staffed by leading non-academic boarded specialists in surgery, internal medicine, critical care, and other specialties) will support the School of Veterinary Medicine's mission. This off-site clinical presence will also enable UC Davis to reach a broader base of clients and supporters and leverage the clinical, teaching, and research excellence at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Davis, California. The facility will be a $30+M self supporting enterprise critical to the School of Veterinary Medicine mission.
