At RWJBarnabas Health, our nursing leaders at Children's Specialized Hospital help create an environment where exceptional clinical care, teamwork, and family-centered service come together. As a Lead Registered Nurse supporting Pediatric Ambulatory Care, you'll combine hands-on nursing with clinical leadership to support children with special healthcare needs and medical complexities. Working alongside the RN Manager or Director, you'll help guide nursing practice, staff education, clinical workflow, and day-to-day operations while continuing to provide compassionate care directly to patients and families. Joining Children's Specialized Hospital means becoming part of a collaborative team committed to helping children receive coordinated, high-quality care throughout every stage of their healthcare journey.

As a Lead Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:

  • Providing comprehensive, family-centered nursing care to children with special healthcare needs and medical complexities within the pediatric ambulatory practice
  • Partnering with the RN Manager or Director to provide clinical oversight and promote consistent nursing practices, patient flow, and standards of care across the medical practice
  • Performing and documenting telephone and in-person clinical triage while using sound nursing judgment to identify patient needs and determine appropriate next steps
  • Administering and managing vaccinations, including patient and family education, vaccine ordering, documentation, and reporting in accordance with internal and external standards
  • Providing patient and family education, point-of-care testing, clinical assessments, medication support, and other direct nursing services within the ambulatory setting
  • Coordinating medication refills and authorizations while collaborating with providers, pharmacies, and other members of the healthcare team
  • Supporting nursing orientation, education, competency development, and ongoing staff performance to promote consistent, high-quality clinical care
  • Providing clinical guidance and oversight to nursing staff, medical assistants, and prescription coordinators while serving as a trusted resource for day-to-day clinical questions
  • Assisting nursing leadership with staffing coverage by identifying appropriate resources and maintaining clinical coverage schedules for the practice
  • Collaborating with internal and external providers to promote continuity of care within a patient- and family-centered, team-based model

This role might be for you if:

  • You are passionate about caring for children with special healthcare needs and complex medical conditions
  • You enjoy remaining clinically involved while also mentoring, educating, and supporting fellow healthcare professionals
  • Strong clinical judgment allows you to confidently manage both telephone and in-person patient triage
  • You are comfortable providing guidance and helping create consistency across nursing practices and clinical workflows
  • Clear communication, conflict management, and relationship-building skills define your leadership approach
  • You understand the importance of adapting care to each child's developmental, cognitive, physical, cultural, and individual needs
  • You thrive in a collaborative outpatient environment where nurses, physicians, medical assistants, families, and other professionals work together toward shared goals
  • You value continuous learning and enjoy helping create a culture of accountability, teamwork, and clinical excellence

To be considered for this Lead Registered Nurse opportunity, you must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license and current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider certification. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, along with two to five years of pediatric nursing experience. Candidates should demonstrate strong pediatric clinical assessment and triage skills, effective communication, leadership ability, and experience supporting patient and family education within an ambulatory care environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable providing clinical oversight to nursing and support staff while remaining actively involved in direct patient care, vaccination management, medication coordination, staff education, competency development, and clinical workflow. This position supports a pediatric outpatient practice caring for children with special healthcare needs and medical complexities at Children's Specialized Hospital.
