Web Content Strategist (Temporary)

Reporting to the Director of Integrated Marketing within SJSU's central University Marketing and Communications (UMC), the Web Content Strategist position is dedicated to the one-year sjsu.edu website redesign project. This position will support the development of a fully refreshed, comprehensive web content strategy and will refine the brand's digital voice. The incumbent will audit the existing content footprint, refine and write new copy for the new digital ecosystem and weave our core brand narrative into our most critical pages. They will also ensure that storytelling is consistently integrated into compelling, high-traffic pages, transforming technical or dry copy into engaging, people-centered narratives.

The position collaborates closely with UMC's web and marketing teams, including UX, SEO and marketing best practices, to ensure our new site is effective, condensed, clear, intuitive and optimized for both modern search engines (SEO) and AI-driven answer engines (AEO). The strategist will also support the development of a content governance strategy to ensure our website writing stays accurate and audience-centered.

Key Responsibilities



  • Identify core audiences for content and re-organize content to ensure a positive user experience.
  • Partner with the Director of Integrated Marketing to weave the SJSU brand voice throughout the website and digital ecosystem.
  • Track website content changes and log all content-related work for measurement.
  • Establish a content governance strategy for SJSU, in partnership with UMC and IT leadership.
  • Work closely with the agency of record to support recommendations around web governance and content strategy for the website redesign.
  • Leverage SEMRush or other tools to ensure website copy is optimized and search-friendly.
  • Utilize web crawlers (e.g., Screaming Frog), analytics (Google Analytics/Adobe/GSC) and SEO/AEO tools (SEMrush/Ahrefs) to audit content at scale and keep the project organized.
  • Work closely with the Content Migration Specialist to assess all website content for the redesign: archive, condense, or keep.
  • Draft new content or refresh existing content across all sjsu.edu web pages.
  • Refresh stories, develop new content that illustrates the brand and fact-check content, as needed.
  • Coordinate content reviews, approvals and edits with stakeholders across the University.
  • Make recommendations for content across various formats: written, infographics, visual, etc.
  • Identify opportunities to merge multiple thin or redundant pages into comprehensive, high-performing "pillar" pages.
  • Document and categorize content to keep revisions organized.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Thorough and advanced knowledge of marketing, branding, communications, public relations, and related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently apply advanced judgment in developing and implementing strategies and initiatives.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing strategies and campaigns, with a demonstrated record of achieving measurable results.
  • Strong story development, journalistic writing, and editorial skills.
  • Expert knowledge of web writing and content development, with an understanding of key audiences in higher education.
  • Strong ability to present complex information in simplified, concise, and accessible web formats.
  • Understanding of information architecture, navigation, user journeys, and website schema.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of web content strategy and governance.
  • Expert knowledge of SEO, AEO, and content optimization.
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility guidelines and best practices.
  • Knowledge of content management systems, such as Drupal, WordPress, and Omni CMS.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with UMC colleagues, University staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to adhere to AP Style guidelines and editorial best practices.
  • Ability to use data to inform strategic content recommendations and decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet accelerated timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.



Required Qualifications



  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience.



Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, or related field.
  • A minimum of four years of professional web content/content strategy experience
  • Experience with large or complex websites
  • Demonstrated SEO/AEO, content governance, accessibility, CMS, analytics, and web writing experience



Compensation

Classification: Marketing Communications Professional III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,307/month - $7,909/month (Step 12 - Step 16)
CSU Salary Range: $5,877/month - $8,561/month (Step 1 - Step 20)
