Job Summary:



This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinically busy orthopedic sports medicine practice with one of the premier sports medicine groups on the front range of Colorado. The position will be a part-time (.50 FTE or 2.5 days per week) Instructor-Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner position in the Department of Orthopedics. The employee may work in Denver, Aurora and Boulder, CO. The position is not eligible for tenure.

Supervision received: This position reports to Dr. Eric McCarty, but will work with other Sports Medicine physicians in the Sports Medicine practice, and as needed, with the Chair of the Department, Dr. Evalina Burger-Van Der Walt and the Department of Orthopedics Director of Finance and Administration.

Key Responsibilities:

This is a position requiring interest in Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. The applicant must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high intensity environment. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills are required as well.



  • Obtains detailed history and performs physical examination on assigned patients; assesses and treats acute/chronic medical problems (focusing on the musculoskeletal system) and provides direct patient care to a specified patient population. Write prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies and DME as needed. Complete FMLA and other forms and school notes as needed.
  • Assists in providing pre-op and post-op care; writes appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs. There may be some casting, splinting, and dressing required.
  • Performs emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and massive hemorrhage or similar emergencies. Occasionally provide fracture reductions in office as needed, but no conscious sedation. Facile at use of ultrasound for ultrasounds guided injections and aspirations.
  • Notifies attending physician on call, house physician on call or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Practices safety, environmental and /or infection control methods.
  • Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic. Work with the team to ensure smooth operation of the clinic.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; maintains other records as required.
  • Provides health education to patients and families.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Will assist in community outreach events including giving educational talks, organizing, planning and attending.
  • May perform clinical research related to specific conditions and assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Must become proficient in documentation and use of current Electronic Medical Record and be an available resource to other health care providers.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Flexibility a required as the nature of the position may change over time as one gains knowledge and experience with sports medicine/orthopedic conditions.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • State of Colorado Certified Physician's Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants
  • CPR or BLS Certified


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience preferred. May be willing to train new graduate with previous hospital/orthopedic experience or exceptional qualities.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$50,000 - $55,000 for a .50 FTE position

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
