The Computing Services central IT department provides services that have a strategic impact on university goals. CMU's Computing Services department is searching for a Systems Software Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by designing, developing, testing and maintaining applications or systems programs. Gathers and provides input on functional specifications and requirements. Supports business user questions/issues regarding applications and/or systems issues and availability. Develops and maintains technical documentation. May perform other related technical support for the department or college.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Designs, develops, tests and maintains applications or systems programs.

  • Develops and maintains technical documentation.

  • Gathers and provides input on functional specifications and requirements.

  • May perform other related technical support for the department or college.

  • Supports business user questions/issues regarding applications and/or systems issues and availability.

  • Participate in improvement initiative regarding audit, analysis, and documentation of existing or new products and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Effective teamwork skills

  • 3-5 years of operating system administration experience

  • 3-5 years of oral and written communication experience

  • 3-5 years of systems/software engineering experience

  • 3-5 years of industry experience developing, maintaining, and supporting object-oriented software and/or web-based applications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with object-oriented web application development

  • Preferred proficiency with git, GitLab, or other version control software

  • Proficiency with best practices in database design and sophisticated knowledge of SQL queries and various SQL reporting tools Preferred proficiency with caching technologies

  • Preferred proficiency with PHP and popular JavaScript frameworks

  • Familiarity with Test Driven Development (TDD) or other SDLC methodologies

  • Familiarity with UI/UX testing technologies such as Cucumber, Selenium, etc.

  • Ability to debug and troubleshoot various application, networking, and integration issues

  • Ability to follow accurate software engineering practices such as: documentation, development of test scripts, version control, and project management

  • Ability to provide strategic leadership in areas of technical and creative development
