Description

The HCI Institute at Carnegie Mellon is searching for design teaching track faculty with industry experience collaborating in, and/or leading interdisciplinary teams in research, design, prototyping and testing. Teaching faculty in the Human-Computer Interaction program bring their experience working in a product company and/or consultancy in a design studio style educational setting that emphasizes team-based projects, application of theory to practice, critique and presentation. The design teaching faculty may have worked as an interaction designer, product designer, user experience designer, user interface designer, service designer, strategist, design researcher, design manager or other related roles. HCII teaching faculty typically carry a load of 8 classes annually that may be offset with service on committees and other HCII initiatives. The effective date of appointment is Fall 2024. Salary is dependent on education, industry experience, teaching experience, and other relevant qualifications.

The HCI Institute produces exceptional undergraduate and master students who improve the state of the world through a systematic, disciplined and principled approach to using technology to innovate and improve the human condition. We teach students preparing to become UX designers, service designers, UX researchers, HCI practitioners, frontend developers, learning science innovators, human-centered data scientists, product managers, and other technology leadership positions.


Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have at least three years of industry experience and demonstrate mastery in interaction design, visual design, user experience design, user interface design, conceptual design, concept validation, prototyping, usability evaluation and testing, digital storytelling, product design, service design or design facilitation. Qualified applicants will demonstrate a history of creating value through the disciplined application of design methods, principles, techniques, processes and tools. Applicants with prior teaching experience, mentoring responsibilities and evidence of applying design theory to industry projects are preferred. Applicants who can teach courses in research and technology that are adjacent to design courses will be preferred. All applicants will be required to submit a portfolio. Selected applicants will be required to give a teaching demonstration to HCI students and faculty.

A Bachelor's Degree in design or a related field is required for this position. We encourage applications from candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with and/or mentoring under-represented students such as women, minorities, students with disabilities, and students from lower SES. We will consider candidates at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor levels.
