Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is hiring a Facilities Area Manager (FAM) to oversee the management of assigned buildings in a designated region. The FAM serves as the primary liaison between the Facilities Division and customers, addressing all facilities and infrastructure-related issues.

The FAM may lead both exempt and non-exempt personnel, subcontractors, or project teams.

What You Will Do:



  • Act as the primary contact for customers, ensuring the Facilities Division meets their operational and infrastructure needs.
  • Hold regular meetings with customers to understand their mission requirements, strengthen relationships, provide updates, and manage expectations.
  • Build strong partnerships with Facilities & EHS team members to enhance service delivery and achieve goals.
  • Address customer concerns promptly and escalate them to Facilities leadership as needed.
  • Address system issues quickly to keep buildings operational and ready for missions.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all assigned buildings.
  • Ensure building systems are maintained according to recommended strategies and schedules.
  • Communicate long-term capital planning needs to the Regional Operations Manager and Facility Operations Department Head, participating in annual assessments and project prioritization.
  • Develop and maintain Service Level Agreements for assigned buildings in collaboration with research divisions.
  • Lead facilities management projects and initiatives to enhance processes and reduce risks.
  • Oversee work orders from initiation to execution, collaborating with managers, engineers, and personnel to define scope, prioritize, and ensure timely completion.
  • Support outage planning with the Outage Portfolio Manager to minimize impact on occupants.
  • Collaborate with the preventative maintenance group to ensure adequate servicing of building systems.
  • Participate in design reviews and project meetings to communicate operational needs and coordinate project activities in the buildings.



What is Required:

Facilities Area Manager Level 3:



  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus a minimum of five years in building and facilities management within a complex, multi-client environment.
  • Knowledgeable in facilities management principles within a large campus setting.
  • Skilled in managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in identifying, assessing, communicating, and resolving complex technical and systemic issues.
  • Self-starter and proven leader with the ability to work independently and foster partnerships with research and operations to resolve facilities and service issues while ensuring mission alignment.
  • Capable of supporting outage planning and interacting effectively with all levels across research and operations.
  • Proven track record of leading teams to achieve goals and preparing clear presentations on complex issues.
  • Strong initiative, creativity in decision-making, and sound judgment to enhance team effectiveness and customer service.
  • Extensive knowledge of disaster planning, emergency preparedness, and facility safety regulations.
  • Proficient in computer applications (Google Suite, MS Office, Facilities Management Systems) for data analysis and report generation.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills, able to influence and facilitate consensus among diverse teams.
  • Available for weekend, emergency, and extended operations as needed, with prompt onsite response when on-call.
  • Valid CA Driver's License.


In Addition to the Above, Facilities Area Manager Level 4:



  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus at least eight years in facilities and infrastructure management within a complex, multi-client environment, involving multi-level customer interaction and program administration.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree in the areas noted.
  • Leading experience.
  • Certificated Facility Manager (CFM) through the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) or equivalent.
  • PMP/Project Management or equivalent training.
  • Demonstrate understanding of DOE Orders, National Laboratory work controls, safety and environmental, and project management processes.



Notes:



  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid).
  • The Facilities Area Manager Level 3 is expected to pay $135,000 - $156,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $99,624 - $168,132 annually for the job classification of G95.3.
  • The Facilities Area Manager Level 4 is expected to pay $159,000 - $177,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $120,672 - $203,592 annually for the job classification of G95.4.
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
